  • Joshua Abrams : Represencing - LP (Aguirre, 2020)

  • Joshua Abrams' second album with group from 2012, superb avant-jazz / "Represencing" is the second installment of the joshua abrams sound world introduced on his 2010 Eremite album "Natural Information". Recorded at home in Chicago summer of 2011, Abrams again organizes small group statements around the resonant grooves of the north african ceremonial instrument the guimbri with a unique & broadly assimilative compositional voice. Sources from traditional musics to minimalism, jazz to krautrock, animate represencing, but Abrams is always grounded in the solidity of true working musicianship & he proves himself an artist fluent not just in styles but traditions. Abrams' guest musicians embrace his polyglot approach. Goaded (the guimbri is partly constructed from animal-hide) by Abrams to focus on a particular facet of their vocabularies, Jeff Parker & Emmett Kelly appear as finely contrasting rhythm guitarists, Michael Zerang gets virtuosic on a tambourine & David Boykin devotes himself to altissimo long-tones & circular breathing / Others perform more structural roles, such as jason stein's bass clarinet, or, as with Nicole Mitchell's diaphanous choir of flute parts, function as landscape. the moondog-influenced "Sungazer" is an aria for Tomeka Reid's spirited cello. throughout the album gong rhythms, synthesizer "sub" bass, harmonium & organ return as unifying coloristic elements. Abrams likens the overall experience to "entering a forest from different directions," & cites as inspirations the AACM, Don Cherry, Arnold Dreyblatt, Hamza El Din, Popul Vuh, Pharaoh Sanders, & Sandy Bull's duets with Billy Higgins

  • Muriel Grossmann : Golden Rule - 2xLP (RR GEMS, 2020)

  • Repress in gatefold old style tip-on cover / "Music is not material, Music is Spiritual". With this one line from what may be his earliest poem, Sun Ra sets before our minds what our ears and heart know to be true: music is a power, a force, and a mystery that can change our way of being, our way of knowing. Music is spiritual. And while the roots of jazz grew from spiritual traditions, it was the music of Sun Ra from the 1950s and especially John Coltrane’s recordings from the mid-1960s that defined spiritual jazz as we know it today. Modal, improvisational, meditative, testifying, droning, polyrhythmic and blazing, spiritual jazz opens the mind to complexity that is simple and simplicity that is complex / Spiritual jazz has a long line of master practitioners, from Coltrane’s contemporaries including Albert Ayler, Ornette Coleman, Cecil Taylor, Yusef Lateef and Pharoah Sanders, to contemporary artists like Nat Birchall and Shabaka Hutchings. Muriel Grossman’s immersion in the powers and traditions of this particular current of jazz has been developing through her last several albums and here in ‘Golden Rule’ she and her band draw deep on the musical practices that evoke the transcendent

  • Fullcolour 6-panel digipack / Recording of the premiere performance of Nitsch’s latest large scale symphony for full orchestra, brass ensemble and choir, in five movements. Composed for the 155th Action of the Orgien-Mysterien-Theater, and performed at the nitsch museum, Mistelbach, September 9th, 2018. Directed by Andrea Cusumano."The 155th action in Herman Nitsch's Das Orgien Mysterien Theater took place on September 1, 2018. As the first action to be staged in the Nitsch Museum in Mistelbach, Vienna, it coincided with the occasion of his 80th birthday. A series of processions both viscerally affecting and poignant in their restraint took place in the museum to a very crowded audience / This action was accompanied by a new symphony composed by Nitsch for large orchestra, brass band, and choir. Sudden and explosive motifs for the brass band punctuate still, though unnerving, drone-like passages that modulate over the course of the two-hour performance. Throughout, the movement of the participants in the action and the audience is accentuated by the incongruous percussive ring of the whistle that calls attention and directs the activity, heightening the intensity of the entire work

The special and specific usage of the acoustic possibilities are in the foreground, while the visual part of the play is communicated by a narrator“. A prime example of the intense & noisy wildness of Nitsch’s early actions, employing scream-choirs, beating, whistles, chaotic austrian folklore juxtapositions, a pretty rough brass section and dissonant strings

  • Alain Goraguer : La Planète Sauvage Original Soundtrack - LP (Superior Viaduct, Sugar, 2020)

  • Black vinyl reissue, includes spot UV tip-on jacket and printed inner sleeve / Animated sci-fi masterpiece La Planète Sauvage (a.k.a. Fantastic Planet), winner at Cannes Film Festival in 1973, is a bizarre and beautiful film. Towering blue-skinned figures, tiny humanoids in the midst of revolt, and drug-induced Tantric sex transport viewers to a truly magical setting. Composer Alain Goraguer creates an equally hypnotic score from a palette of effects-laden guitars, flutes, Fender Rhodes and strings. While the lush arrangements are reminiscent of Goraguer’s collaborations with Serge Gainsbourg in the 1960s, space-age synth flourishes suggest a more psychedelic era. Moody vignettes flow together in tense, slow-paced funk rhythms and Baroque textures / It comes as no surprise that La Planète Sauvage has been cited as an influence on contemporary artists such as French duo Air and American hip-hop producers J Dilla and Madlib. Gorgeous, interplanetary soundscapes resemble the surreal meeting point between Pink Floyd’s Obscured by Clouds and Broadcast’s Future Crayon. • Sarah Davachi : Cantus, Descant - 2xLP (Late Music, 2020)

  • Black vinyl, gatefold sleeve / Sound artist and composer Sarah Davachi presents us with Cantus, Descant, a sprawling new double-album of organ drones and dreamy songs, that features vocals for the first time. Released through the artist's own label Late Music label. "I spent a lot of time while working on this album thinking about impermanence and endings, which led me to change my understanding of “vanitas” and “memento mori.” These concepts arise allegorically across classical antiquity and Buddhist thought, among many other sources, but they were most obsessively expressed during the Renaissance in still lives and miniatures that contrasted the simultaneous passing and stillness of time. My interpretation is completely secular, softer, and more benign, but the awareness of a moment’s feeling remains / There’s a lot of symbolist imagery in the work titles, references to place and nature; the “Stations” series in particular is a reconfiguring of the idea of states of being. The pervading affect on the album is one that gives reverence to the suspension, the epoché, a space where we welcome and attempt to reconcile impermanence. It is an opportunity to go inside—oneself, one’s sound—in order to simultaneously commune with our comforts and that which we mourn, perhaps not unlike the function of a hymn."

  • Vanish is Julia Reidy’s yearning debut for Editions Mego. Since 2019, Julia’s bubbling 12-string guitar work - sighing streams of crystal plucks drawn closer or echoing on - has moored a tactile, ever-lusher sound. On "Guitar", the Australian, Berlin-based musician melts down sharp synths; electric fuzz and flex; uncanny found sounds; and autotuned voice and harmonica in a heady, overpowering potion

  • To be heard with ears half bent, or with one side facing what Maryanne Amacher calls "The Third Ear". The great reverence in which the Tanpura is held by Indian classical music, its transcendental but occulted place in the tradition alongside its normal function as a drone, made a strong impression on the composer such that it has taken decades to formulate even a simple Tanpura Study. The fundamentals, the Om, as well as the overtones, the music of the spheres -all these have their valid rights, but in Tanpura Study they are embedded in a series of gestures, what I call signatures, on the melodic level

  • Still House Plants : Fast Edit - LP (Bison, Blank Forms Editions, 2020)

  • Still House Plants present their second LP "Fast Edit". Cultivated over the course of 2019, the album switches the combativeness of previous releases for bare intimacy / "Fast Edit" is a palette of qualities and curdled headspaces. Now living far apart and coming together only for intense periods of shows and touring, the band have come to rely on an archive of mp3s (quick recall overtakes stable long term memory). Written on mobile phones, dictaphones, and laptops, "Fast Edit" cuts rehearsals and schemas with tight, raucous tracks. This is most tenderly at play on "Shy Song" – a cut'n'chase piece, in which all sounds are ghosts of another. "PredikateD" is a phone on the ground: the voice is air, the guitar and drums meld with the plywood and sand-bag structure, the seams exposed / The taste of the record is captured in an intervention written for the cancelled 2020 edition of Glasgow’s Counterflows Festival by Frances Morgan: "How do you think we should do this? The song does something different now, puts the other foot forward. How do you know when it’s done? End on a verb and it becomes a command: run! Towards the next thing. Do – towards the next thing to be done."

  • Vuelo por las Alturas de Alhambra by Jabir was originally published in 1988 on Discos Esplendor Geométrico and it's a hidden gem in the catalogue of this influential Spanish label. The album unfolds a series of subtle and mesmerising compositions inspired by the legacy of Al-Andalus, the muslim Spanish civilisation. Both a polymath and erudite musician, Jabir decided to pay homage to the marriage of spirituality and science present in that bygone era. For that aim, he relied on a vast array of acoustic instruments (ney, violin, ud, bendir and daf), as well as on digital synthesizers and a complex system of computers able to generate aleatory melodies in Middle Eastern scales / Discos Transgénero is proud to make this extraordinary and highly sought masterpiece available again for the first time in more than three decades. Wong has developed techniques that take the cello beyond tradition into a vocabulary more closely rooted in the sounds of the natural world. • Record Store Day Release / Numbered reissue / Originally released in 1982, Pascal Comelade's Sentimientos is one of the most elusive and sought after LPs in the French composer's vast catalogue. Recorded on a two-track Revox machine, the album is an eclectic series of brief pieces – only two of the twenty tracks exceed four minutes – showcasing his poetic imagination and impressive range. While much of Comelade's early work hints at many of the major electronic movements to come, Sentimientos remains earthbound and organic. Melodic fragments performed on piano, organ, plastic saxophone, vibes, guitar, toy piano, ukulele and synthesizer place Comelade's boundless creative spirit on display. It is telling that Comelade chooses to cover a Brian Eno tune not from the ambient pioneer's seminal Music For Airports, released just four years earlier, but rather the more traditional "Taking Tiger Mountain," here rendered to highlight the song's previously hidden hymn-like qualities

The band was named after a fictitious goddess from the "Cthulhu" mythos of H.P. Lovecraft / This Shub Niggurath album features the band's very first recordings, it is an absolute killer! Of all the second-generation French Zeuhl albums perhaps this recording best recreates the savage intensity of Magma's early period instrumental moments. The two extended pieces, "Yog Sothoth" and "Barback", by the band's two composers Jean Luc Herve and Frank Fromy, come from out of left field to musically blow the cobwebs out. The album closer "In Memoriam" is fittingly titled and works to perfection as a final musical footnote to the album. • In the late 1960s, Ursula Bogner started to record her own music on reel-to-reel tapes. With some of these titles, we only found individual tracks of pieces recorded on a four-track-recorder – in these cases, I had to recombine the separate tracks to recreate the original piece. Unfortunately, I could not involve Ursula Bogner in the mixing process as she passed away in 1994. Invoking the original’s authenticity might seem insensitive, yet there was no other way to release them in their entirety. Ultimately, only three of the tracks featured on this CD/LP are such "reworkings". All other titles were taken straight from the original reels. Covering a fairly short period of her creative career, they also convey a peculiar coherence in both form and content / A coherence that reflects her accessible, rhythmic and sometimes even "poppy" side. Naturally, my own preference played a part in the selection process. All my personal favourites made it on the CD/LP, and whenever I listen to this collection, I invariably succumb to the titles’ light-hearted nonchalance. This might leave many hours of undiscovered gems, but a further compilation is already in the works. My thanks go out to the Bogner family, especially Sebastian Bogner, who was generous enough to grant me access to the reels and supply me with invaluable insights into his mother’s life. I hope that listeners will enjoy the same exhilaration I experienced on discovery of Ursula Bogner’s music

  • Andrew Pekler : Sounds From Phantom Islands - LP (Faitiche, 2019)

  • Faitiche presents a new album by Andrew Pekler: "Sounds From Phantom Islands" brings together ten tracks created over the last three years for the interactive website Phantom Islands - A Sonic Atlas. With his 2016 album Tristes Tropiques, Pekler created a highly unique cosmos of ethnographic sound speculations. Sounds From Phantom Islands continues and simultaneously expands this concept: finely elaborated chordal motifs float like fog over fictional maritime landscapes. A masterpiece of contemporary Exotica.Phantom islands are islands that appeared on historical maps but never actually existed / The status of these artefacts of European colonial expansion from the 15th to the 19th century oscillates between cartographic fact and maritime fiction. Sounds From Phantom Islands interprets and presents these imaginations as a quasi-ethnographic catalog of music and synthetic field recordings. The pieces on this album are based on recordings made for Phantom Islands - A Sonic Atlas, an online interactive map developed with cultural anthropologist Stefanie Kiwi Menrath

Originally released on Scape in 2006 as a CD and download, the album's six tracks took their cues from Jelinek's live concerts of that period: dense, slowly unfolding loop improvisations made with a laptop, various effect pedals and miniature synthesizers. It is music that floats in a semi-conscious state between dream and awakening, always slightly mysterious, leaving traces that lead directly to the psychedelic-cosmic music of the kraut era

Usually operating under his Kassel Jaeger moniker, Bonnet is a major figure in contemporary electronics and electro-acoustic music, collaborating with artists such as Lucy Railton, Jim O’Rourke, and Stephen O’Malley, and releasing his work on labels including Editions Mego, Senufo, and Shelter Press / Always meticulously detailed yet immediately affecting, Bonnet’s work situates itself at a very personal intersection between the traditions of academic electronic and electroacoustic music, and a more shadowy, underground group of approaches to experimental sound: kosmische Musik, the tape murk of the 1980s underground, the haunted ambience of Christoph Heemann & Co / Meith immediately welcomes us into its densely layered sound world of electronic tones, positive organ, and unidentifiable field-recorded textures. Almost static yet constantly in flux, it deliberately opens itself up to repeated and varied listening: from a distance, its many voices cohere into a monolithic plane of sound, while closer inspection reveals myriad details and momentary events. • Even though Iannis Xenakis never made "musique concrète" in the sense given by Pierre Schaeffer, the GRM was a locus for experimenting with his ideas about sound and sound structures. The works, composed between 1958 and 1962, show a boldness as advanced as in his orchestral approach / The relationship between Xenakis and Schaeffer was often tense. It nevertheless entailed mutual recognition and respect towards each other's musical approach. Moreover, "Bohor" is dedicated to Schaeffer, as evidenced by the letter Xenakis sent him on October 8th, 1968: "Dear Pierre, I have decided to dedicate Bohor to you, out of friendship and gratitude for your contribution to music. I hope you are pleased with this." Schaeffer found the piece disproportionate in terms of intensity but was indeed pleased by the dedication / The four pieces presented here, all produced at the GRM, undoubtedly demonstrate the experimental intent and the strictly "physical" character of Xenakis' music, in that it provides the audience with a listening experience of a rare intensity

This cassette has been released by the Japanese imprint Siren Records, although it seems that Chalk himself did all of the printing. So, it certainly looks as lovely as it sounds. The album opens with a 22 minute abstraction of piano tones, smeared, stretched, and warbled by a process that seems more attuned to tape decay techniques than the placid smooth surfaces that have come from Chalk's recordings as of late. This has the sound more of the misty psychedelic ambient tapestries from Natural Snow Buildings or the hauntological loops of Indignant Senility

This has the sound more of the misty psychedelic ambient tapestries from Natural Snow Buildings or the hauntological loops of Indignant Senility / There's something very prescient about this track, as if Chalk were responding to many of the divergent streams of drone-based constructions that are happening throughout the world right now. The rest of the album is definitely a detour for Chalk, as he presents a series of sad, sodden snippets composed on guitar, koto, synth, piano, and field recordings. Unlike so many who attempts an album of gossamer, minimalist sounds, Chalk seeks the same chromatic hues through his sources. It's the same melancholy which runs through his impressionist drones that can be found in an ellipsis for untreated acoustic guitar or a melody upon cosmic-minded synth or an atypical strum upon his koto. That makes for quite a remarkable album for Mr. Chalk, once again (Aquarius)

His sound works took on many forms – commissioned fashion runway scores, soundtracking perfume, soundscapes for pre-fab houses, train station sound design – all existing not as side work but as logical extensions of his philosophy of sound. • Bellows : Undercurrent - LP (Black Truffle, 2020)

  • Black Truffle are pleased to announce Undercurrent, the new LP from the long-running Milanese duo of Giuseppe Ielasi and Nicola Ratti. Following on from high-profile releases on Boomkat Editions and Shelter Press in the last few years, the eight untitled pieces making up Undercurrent continue the pair’s hypnotic and disorientating practice of improvisation based on tape loops. Often sitting halfway between electro-acoustic technique and beat-based production, the music of Bellows obliquely recalls aspects of hip-hop, dub, and techno while skewing their rhythmic foundations. While consistent with the distinctive language the duo have developed over the last decade, Undercurrent moves away from the explicit references made to club music in their recent releases / It presents a suite of pieces that are markedly more minimal, at times reminiscent in their haunted introspection of the legendary Tolerance records on Vanity Records. The pieces here often dwell for minutes at a time on single repeating tones, reverberating like distant bells in desolate landscapes of looped tape hiss. Where previous releases were primarily based on samples, Undercurrent uses recordings of the duo playing various instruments (guitar, drums, synthesizer) cut into tape loops and then used as the bases for song-length tracks, each of which establishes a central repeating motif while also opening up on close listening to reveal multitudes of improvised detail and subtle shifts in tone, texture, and tempo / Beginning with the mournful sliding tones and obscured fragments of field recordings on the opening track, the LP moves from lush synth pads to super-minimal pings and haunted drone. On "6" and "7", spacious, hanging guitar figures give the music an elegiac quality recalling the work of Dean Roberts and Ielasi’s own earlier guitar-based music (such as the classic Gesine, released on Häpna in 2005). The record subtly builds to its final track, which works the barest of elements – a slowed-tone loop of steel drums, a distant whistle, beeping electronics – into a piece somehow imbued with a quiet grandeur, a fitting conclusion to a record that, like all of the duo's work, is both sonically exploratory and immediately accessible

  • Clear green vinyl / Barely known outside of his home country during his lifetime, the late Japanese ambient music pioneer Hiroshi Yoshimura has seen his global stature rise steadily in the past few years. The 2017 reissue of his lauded debut, Music For Nine Post Cards, along with a slow building cult internet following has helped ignite a renaissance in his acclaimed body of work, much of which has never been released outside of Japan. Known for his sound design and environmental music, Yoshimura worked on a number of commissions following the 1982 release of Music For Nine Post Cards, including works for museums, galleries, public spaces, TV shows, video art, fashion shows, and even a cosmetics company / Originally released in 1986, GREEN is one of Hiroshi Yoshimura’s most well-loved recordings and a favorite of the artist himself. Recorded over the winter of 1985-86 at Yoshimura’s home studio, the compositions unfold at an unhurried pace, a stark contrast to the busy city life of Tokyo. As Yoshimura explained in the original liner notes, the album title in the context of this body of work is not meant to be seen as a color, but is rather used to convey “the comfortable scenery of the natural cycle known as GREEN”—which perfectly encapsulates the soothing and warm sounds contained on the album, although it was created utilizing Yamaha FM synthesizers, known for their crisp digital tones.

  • Crystal green swirl vinyl, mailorder only edition / Barely known outside of his home country during his lifetime, the late Japanese ambient music pioneer Hiroshi Yoshimura has seen his global stature rise steadily in the past few years.

  • Hiroshi Yoshimura : Music For Nine Post Cards - LP (Empire Of Sign, 2020)

  • Despite his status as a key figure in the history of Japanese ambient music, Hiroshi Yoshimura remains tragically under-known outside of his home country. Empire of Signs – a new imprint co-helmed by Maxwell August Croy, Spencer Doran and distributed by Light In The Attic – is proud to reissue Yoshimura’s debut Music for Nine Post Cards for the first time outside Japan in collaboration with Hiroshi’s widow Yoko Yoshimura, with more reissues of Hiroshi’s works to follow in the future / Working initially as a conceptual artist, the musical side of Yoshimura’s artistic practice came to prominence in the post-Fluxus scene of late 1970s Tokyo alongside Akio Suzuki and Takehisa Kosugi, taking many subsequent turns within Japan’s bubble economy afterward. His sound works took on many forms – commissioned fashion runway scores, soundtracking perfume, soundscapes for pre-fab houses, train station sound design – all existing not as side work but as logical extensions of his philosophy of sound. His work strived for serenity as an ideal, and this approach can be felt strongly on Music for Nine Post Card

He started out with a double qualification: he first became an engineer – due to the pressure of his parents – and then studied composition with Olivier Messiaen in Paris, the teacher of Karlheinz Stockhausen, Iannis Xenakis, Francois Bayle, to name just a few… / This vinyl is one result: "12 Inventions ..." is now being released for the very first time: a milestone in electronic music and a perfect example for Reibel’s musical austerity: very defined and limited musical material results in concentrated and dense forms. The unusually vital character of the music is also due to Reibel’s use of hybrid sound production: he very often combined amplitude envelopes of acoustic sounds and noises (especially and very often of polysteron) on synthetic electronic sounds

  • Lol Coxhill, Morgan-Fisher : Slow Music - LP (Aguirre, 2020)

Originally from 1981 and now re-issued for the first time on black vinyl / Cherry Red generously gave Morgan Fisher musical carte-blanche by offering to distribute a label of his own so, like his studio, he called his label Pipe. For the first album he decided to record an album of ambient music. Rather than using synths, Morgan decided to invite soprano sax supremo Lol Coxhill to supply some raw material which he then processed in various ways. The opening track is based on Lol’s beautiful performance of Handel’s Largo, recycled through tape delays, VCS3 filters and octave shifts / The result (in Morgan's opinion) is somewhat like a Mexican funeral march. Other tracks transform the sound of the sax sound into bells (!) and lush orchestral soundscapes. The 20-minute title track is based on the melody of the short closing track (which Lol sang, accompanied by church bells!). Morgan recorded phrases from the melody using piano, guitar, bass and voice. He snipped off the beginning of each note (about 5mm of tape) making the sounds less recognisable, then looped each phrase and recorded long stretches of the loops onto individual tracks of his 8-track TEAC. Finally he created this piece in real time by fading tracks in and out through long tape delays. This pioneering work took weeks of intense experimenting and has been cited as an influence by several top Japanese artists such as Haruomi Hosono of YMO

Gustaf Dickssons' fascination for christianity/religious assemblies shines through once again, the title Livets Ord ("The word of life") derived from the Swedish free church/sect with the same name that was based in Uppsala between 1983-2013 and casting a pastoral shadow over the ambient music of the album. The titlesuggests that this can't last forever: living with less (and finally without) machines may have to become a collective decision in the future or (moreprobably) a consequence of a combination of crisis (both energetic, economicaland ecological)

  • Jim O'Rourke : Shutting Down Here - LP (Portraits GRM, 2020)

  • Shutting Down Here is a special work. Symbolically, it covers a period of thirty years, between two visits by Jim O'Rourke to the GRM, the first, as a young man fascinated by the institution and his repertoire, the second, as an accomplished musician, influential and imbued with an aura of mystery. Shutting Down Here is a piece shaped like an universe, a heterogeneous world in which collides the multiple musical facets of Jim O'Rourke: instrumental writing, field recordings, electronic textures and cybernetic becomings, dynamic spaces, harmonic spaces, silent spans . This variety of approach, strangely, does not in any way weaken the coherence of the whole and this is the talent of Jim O'Rourke, a talent, properly speaking, of composition, where all the sound elements compete and participate to stakes that exceed them and of a common destiny, that is to say of an apparition

  • Biosphere : Dropsonde - 3xLP (Biophon, 2020)

  • Many talk about 2006’s Dropsonde as Biosphere’s jazz album. There is certainly something to this - while Geir Jenssen’s project has long been a byword for ambient music of rare beauty, some of the tracks on Dropsonde certainly have a jazz inflicted pulse to them / However, these new influences do not indicate a complete shift away from Biosphere’s previous output. Rather, cuts like "Birds Fly By Flapping Their Wings" instead subsume looped grooves into the same atmosphere of wintry beauty that one detects on Biosphere classics such as Substrata. It’s a soundworld that brings to mind an even more cerebral take on the micro-house style of Jan Jelinek, an effect which is only heightened by the fact that such tracks are couched amid a good few numbers that foreground Jenssen’s trademark foggy atmospheres / This new edition of Dropsonde, reissued by Biosphere’s own Biophon label, expands on the record’s original track listing with the addition of seven previously-unreleased numbers. It’s a wonder that Jenssen didn’t include offerings like "In The Shape Of A Flute" into Dropsonde’s original run, so seamlessly do their languid loops sync up with the rest of the LP. It is also fascinating to compare alternate takes of "Birds Fly By Flapping Their Wings" and "Warmed By The Drift" with the album versions for the way they either move towards or diverge from the more jazz-indebted elements of Dropsonde’s sound. This reissue of Biosphere’s 2006 LP Dropsonde bolsters the record’s evocative ambient-jazz fusions with a generous helping of bonus tracks

  • Lucy Railton, Max Eilbacher : Forma / Metabolist Meter (Foster, Cottin, Caetani And A Fly) - LP (Portraits GRM, 2020)

  • Forma by Lucy Railton, is a work that burrows deep inside. It disorientates and teases, without malice. Its beauty lies in gentle projections, which, though subtle, leave deep impressions, like the wings of a nocturnal moth reflecting dark light. Its path, too, is unpredictable, but such disorientation is not a reflection of chaos. Instead, a mysterious intention appears through an imperious unfolding - its logic escapes us, but nevertheless captivates us. It is the story of a becoming of forms, as well as of their fading away and their appearance as a disappearance / Metabolist Meter (Foster, Cottin, Caetani and a Fly), by Max Eilbacher is a teeming piece, a matrix where textures and structures merge together, where the polyrhythmic instances become timbre, where the formal abstraction of the harmonic volutes coagulates around a vibrating form that is actualized in the dramatic reality of a dying fly. And this formal mastery is not disembodied in Max Eilbacher’s work and the kaleidoscopic forms of the sound spectra that he has deployed know how to resonate in the sensations and experiences of each one / These works, each with their own agenda, evolve with grace and inspiration in their exploration of vast sound worlds, and it is with great pride that we present them in the new collection

An artefact may pass easily between the four, entirely at the mercy of the care it is offered, or which finds along the way. The music in question – Marino Zuccheri’s Parete 1967 Per Emilio Vedova, an massive electronic composition created by the multi-talented engineer of the famous Milan RAI Studio of Phonology for the Italian Pavillion at the Montreal Expo ’67, is one such case. It began as part of something known – a wild, sonic public event, was almost entirely forgotten, becoming lost and then unknown. It wasn’t until 2005, when these recordings entered the orbit of Die Schachtel, that anyone had been able to hear them since they were made in 1967, offering their world premiere. As is often the case, the limited edition LP quickly sold out and drifted from view / Finally, after more than a decade long wait, Die Schachtel has wondrously pressed it again, allowing its beautiful challenges to reenter the world. Parete 1967 Per Emilio Vedova is one of the great artifacts of 1960’s Italian avant-garde – a wild, grinding metallic expose which sucks the ear into its depths, made, like so much of the best work of the era, in the spirit of collaboration and the meeting of two minds. Die Schachtel’s edition is the realisation of a life long dream of Marino Zuccheri’s to see this recordings issued. Pulled from the original tapes in his archive, and working closely with him before his death in 2005. A true wonder of towering historical importance. The original and ambitious arrangements make the result a delicious soup! In this first work, their personal Afro-latin-beat reveals a sincere meeting between African and Central American traditions… for this reason they are against the drift of continents! / The collective is connected to Al Doum and the Faryds, sharing some of their members, the same music label and the Guscio Studio where the album has been cooked thanks to the wisdom of the great master pirate. You can travel halfway between the Atlantic continents, where a gritty guitar deploys a solid knowledge of the stronger Latin-rock - you know the "Santana of Piola" is on board! - but it absorbs Funky and Tuareg riffs too, as well as brilliant psych deviations / Heavy horns abound with solutions and influences, blowing arias of Ethio-jazz or Cuban-Salsa crossings, such as Calypso and Caribbean progressions. However, it’s the rhythmic sailors section that supports all the dynamics of the sound with impeccable qualities of polyrhythm, sending seas of bodies into ecstasy; maybe they learn this rowing on a boat? He started making music in the late '80s and developed his personal approach to sound and structure as an autodidact, starting with guitar effect devices and four-track home-recording / Reinhold Friedl studied mathematics and music, won scholarships and international commissions, and built up the ensemble Zeitkratzer, disrespecting all musical frontiers. So it's not astonishing that both met for the first time when Zeitkratzer performed Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music: Dirk Dresselhaus was enthusiastic about this unrestrained contemporary music group which devoted itself to the instrumentation of purely tuned guitar feedback

Here, courtesy of Palilalia, we have a vinyl version. The title doesn’t leave much to the imagination, so what do they sound like? Well, Orcutt plays a clean Telecaster sans effects, whilst Morley plays a modified Squier Telecaster. These duets are improvised, but what we notice is the restraint, making for a disciplined performance from both guitarists

  • Coastlines : Coastlines - 2xLP (Be With, 2020)

  • Coastlines is the self-titled long player from the new Japanese production unit of DJ and producer Masanori Ikeda and solo artist, session musician and Cro-Magnon keyboard player Takumi Kaneko. Masanori and Takumi have been part of the Japanese dance music scene for years and Coastlines was born out of their working together on soundtracks for video projects / The pair wanted to make laid-back listening music for now, laying Takumi’s playful keys over Masanori’s widescreen balearic jazz-fusion to conjure beautiful and breathtaking "coastlines". A couple of two-track 7's put out in late 2018 and early 2019 on Japanese house music label Flower Records soon sold out. Those four tracks were expanded to a full album of music, 'a joyous, relaxing, summery soundtrack for everyone’s after hours wind down" that was released just in time for summer / It soundtracked many a Be With BBQ in 2019. The album opens in the horizontal with the sophisticated, cocktails-by-the-pool groove of "Sunset Reflection". A lush, beatless wonder. Their re-imagining of Ralph MacDonald’s "East Dry River" removes all the original’s bells and whistles (quite literally) and re-gears it with a subtle balearic chug. The result is a percussive gem. "Coastline" is a beach-jazz noodle. "Drifting Ice" is as chilled and glacial as its title would suggest, yet Masanori’s head-nod slo-mo house beats throb not far below the surface

  • Clear vinyl in a screen printed wrap around sleeve / Penultimate Press is proud to present the debut full length from Komare, a UK outfit based somewhere between south-eastern edges of London borough and the Swale. Komare is Dominic Goodman and Peter Blundell who also make up two thirds of Mosquitoes. Somewhat of an estranged cousin to Mosquitoes take on re-ruffled rock, Komare resides more as a dub influenced exploration of the outer fringes, creating a thick vibrational delusion / Somehow like Zweistein mixing a Robert Ashley record, Komare is an exceptional space and time stretching disorientator. In the process of rendering reality redundant Komare gleefully lead the listener into a netherworld of holographic, hallucinatory audio. Shades of Monoton and Pyrolator may also be detected as can the impression of intoxicants wafting around the mixing console. This is a state where humans and machines, though present, are smeared of all traceable attributes. The depths of the journey moves further into a netherworld as the album progresses/disintergrates. Not necessarily one for the beauty seekers, Komare is an extremely deep trip concocted by two unbridled creative crusaders

  • Two years after having recorded Aurora, which Gérard Terronès released on his Futura Records label in 1971, the Théâtre du Chêne Noir put on another show, Miss Madona, first at Avignon, and then at Ariane Mnouchkine’s Théâtre du Soleil. From this play, Gérard Gelas’ group took three sound extracts which they made, with no further ado, into a single. Miss Madona is thus the second recording by Théâtre du Chêne Noir. The two sides(and three tracks) offer up an unbelievable instrumental theatre with something of a white magic ritual about it / The actors, so much better for the record, were also musicians; alongside Miss Madona, ex-star of the circus and now idol, were the piano and electric organ of Daniel Dublet, the saxophones of Pierre Surtel and Jean-Louis Canaud, and the trumpet of Gilbert Say. But there are also the vocals of Beatrice Le Thierry, Bénédicte Maulet, Jean Paul Chazalon, Monik Lamy, Nicole Aubiat… / which added to the mystery of what happened on stage. • Robert Worby : Factitious Airs (Electronic Music) - LP (Persistence Of Sound, 2019)

  • This LP focuses on recorded sound and structures made with recorded sound. How the original sound was produced and the objects used in the production of the sounds is of secondary interest. Tiny details in the sounds are important and what might appear to be insignificant, dull or uneventful is often salient. Acute, obsessive listening brings these elements to the fore / "Can a music made with the modern tools of digital music and contemporary production sound eerily as if created with the same equipment that Stockhausen, Henri and Berio all availed themselves of in the radio studios of the 50s and 60s – and yet sound bright and fresh to the ears of today's listeners? Robert Worby shows us how, with Factitious Airs." — Carl Stone

  • Thames presents diverse sound interactions along the River Thames that surprise with their musicality. As we travel from central London to the river’s furthest estuary, it feels like we’re travelling back in time. We hear the sounds of nature and industry in competition, from the pitched, quasi-musical sound of Tower Bridge lifting up, to the marsh frogs of Allhallows / "This collection of field recordings by the London Sound Survey brings the Thames to life through sound. Over many years Ian Rawes has made an audio mosaic reflecting this extraordinary landscape, from Tower Bridge to estuarine marshes and a now-lost oil refinery, allowing listeners a unique insight into the experience of these places." — Rachel Lichtenstein, author of "Estuary: out from London to the sea" (Penguin, 2016)

  • One of the pioneers of electroacoustic composition. Joining Pierre Schaeffer's unfathomably influential Groupe De Recherches Musicales in 1963. Produced in pro tools with GRM plug-ins, this record displays a series of sharp impulsions, reputations and percussive audio attacks on the sense. Focusses on extreme panning to induce the listening into another auditory world / La ba-balle du chien-chien à la me-mère [The ball of the old lady's dog] (2001) is a playful take on the way that we speak in a childlike way to pets. A brief narrative at the start invites the listener into this "pet speak" scene, with the sound of footsteps and chatter. These gradually crescendo and morph into a cacophonous swirling explosion. Deux Dents Dehors [Two teeth sticking out] (2007) is a pun on Bernard Parmegiani’s piece Dedans Dehors [Inside Outside] (1977), composed for his birthday / It takes snippets of lively vernacular and processes these into complex patterns of unintelligible and unrecognisable speech sounds, in sustained or percussive sequences. Heullas Entreveradas [Intertwined footprints] (2018) is a new commission that transforms vocal sounds into choral textures which fragment, granulate and transform into continuous whorls and tidal washes interspersed with her trademark short silences

  • Le Théâtre du Chêne Noir : Aurora - LP (Souffle Continu, 2020)

  • In 1972, Steve Lacy recorded Solo, one of the gems in his discography, in the Théâtre du Chêne Noir in Avignon. The previous year (which was also the year in which Aurora appeared), the eponymous group of actors led by Gérard Gelas, took up residence in what was a 12th century chapel. The Théâtre du Chêne Noir is therefore not just the name of a space open to all kinds of artistic audacity, but also the name of the great Theatre Group which resides there. Gérard Terronès showed some flair when he published, in 1971 on Futura, the first album by Théâtre du Chêne Noir. It has to be said that the group run by Gérard Gelas was right up his street: non-conformist, eccentric, protesting, just so alive… / Singing too, as we can still hear today on Aurora, recorded at Avignon the 22 and 23 June 1971. Aurora, which had been created a few weeks earlier at Ariane Mnouchkine’s Théâtre du Soleil, is according to, Gelas’ own words, a fantastic tale with actor musicians who play out the fabulous story of the Earth, and children who fight against terrifying bird men who fly from planet to planet to enslave the inhabitants and become the masters of the universe. It is an ambitious subject and thankfully (even more so for the album than for the play), the actors are also excellent musicians! / If we can find «Chêne Noir» between Checkpoint Charlie and Chillum in the Nurse With Wound List created by Steven Stapleton and John Fothergill, Aurora is closer to Stances à Sophie by the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and the Divine Comédie by Bernard Parmegiani and François Bayle. So, we need to move forward cautiously in this landscape of recitals and songs, of mysteries and cries, where saxophones and flutes, electric guitars and percussions spring up… Could the tragic climax have been possible without music? The Théâtre du Chêne Noir replies no to the question and creates a fascinating mix of text and music without one dominating the other. Enjoy the show!

Whereas the majority of the songs are instrumentals centred around taiko drums and ambient synth textures that mimic the plot, one of the most iconic parts of the score is the opening main theme ‘Making of a Cyborg’ that features a Japanese choir. The female voices are singing parts of the wedding song Toho Kami Emi Tame in the ancient language of Yamato, fusing traditional Japanese notes with Bulgarian harmony, with its swelling synths perfectly capturing the building tension towards the climax of the film. • Against All Logic, Lydia Lunch, Nicolas Jaar : 2017–2019 - 3x12" (Other People, 2020)

  • The tracks on Against All Logic’s 2017-2019 go further than any of the project’s previous records. AAL mastermind Nicolas Jaar has hinted at harshening his sound in the past - the uptempo LP 2012-2017 was flecked with digital distortion and sometimes hinted at a more hard-bitten sound lurking beneath the sample-house bangers. However, the manner in which he switches things up here is still thrillingly unexpected / The core style of 2017-2019 is techno, and hard techno at that. This is best represented in a stern, fuzzed-up mid-section run, from the Lydia Lunch-featuring power-electronics banger "If You Can’t Do It Good, Do It Hard" up to the seasick minimal lurch of "Faith". Jaar moves outwards from this core style in a variety of directions at either end of 2017-2019, maintaining a moody experimentalism all the while. "With An Addict" and "Penny" are the most uptempo jams here - the former, a fluttering juke joint, is an instant highlight - while industrial noise sharpens the edges of the relatively melodic opening duo "Fantasy" and "If Loving You Is Wrong". 2017-2019 does not deal in tracks which will slot seamlessly into a mix, and this uncompromising air is what makes it such a delight / On Against All Logic’s 2017-2019, Nicolas Jaar gives in to his darker impulses. In doing so, he creates some of the best music of his career

Originally issued as a digital-only release back in February of 2018, it's slowly grown to become one of the most cherished releases in the entire Other People discography. Much like Kerrier District did to disco, A.A.L. (Against All Logic) borrows heavily from the samples and sounds ingrained deep within Jaar's listening habits and evidently a record collection packed to the brim with classic soul, house, and most importantly, funk hooks / Keenly twisting these sounds and filtering them through a studio set up that's leaning heavily on the beefed-up kick drums and reverb units to make a well-executed homage to these sounds, pieced together with the inherent idea of making the listener unable to resist the urge to move, be it in a bedroom, basement, or just sat in work staring at a computer screen. A.A.L. (Against All Logic) is both a well-executed homage to all of the above references, yet also just a really strong and enjoyable record from Nicolas Jaar. At once it is fragile and unassuming, whilst simultaneously confident and eccentric; and with a sense of mischief and playfulness, whilst still maintaining an air of drama and maturity. At once light, and at the same time dark, it is an album of delicately assembled parallels and contradictions that work side by side to create that perfectly balanced middle ground / The gentle sound of waves lapping upon a shore in the opening track 'Etre' slowly eases the listener into the down-tempo slo-mo grooves that have become Jaar's trademark. Meanwhile, vocals as disparate as French film dialogue, to the Ray Charles sample of 'I Got a Woman', on the identically named track, weave in and out to create moments of intense texture / Throwing in a myriad of influences from techno, house, hip hop, jazz and blues, it is any wonder that the album maintains any form of direction and clarity. However, cohesion is one of the album's biggest strengths. To listen to any one of the fourteen tracks on the album alone and unaccompanied, dramatic though it may sound, would be some kind of travesty, for Jaar has masterfully crafted a true narrative that undoubtedly deserves the time, space and detachment for which it was intended

  • Yotam Avni : Was Here - 2xLP (Kompakt, 2020)

  • The cover art makes the jazz connection explicit, riffing on the text-based, minimal design of The Modern Jazz Quartet’s 1955 album for Prestige, Concorde. But the way Avni has gathered around him both inspiring musicians and intriguing reference points makes me think of his broader career as well, the collectivism behind his AVADON nights in Tel-Aviv, his many and wide-ranging releases on labels like Innervisions, Hotflush and Stroboscopic Artefacts, and the openness of his productions, which seem to be all about the multiple, the possibilities of cross-pollination, of fusing this with that, ofadding and subtracting, all under the pulsating thumbprint of techno

  • Giuseppe Ielasi : Aix - LP (Keplar, 2020)

  • Reissue of Ielasi's masterpiece / After bowling over audiences with 2007's stellar August, Giuseppe Ielasi has returned with his latest work of art, Aix. Whereas Ielasi approached his medium in August with a more traditional, linear methodology, Aix witnesses a transposition of this technique, and now Ielasi layers his sound vertically. In this sense, Aix isn't an album about progression, but rather growth. Additionally, Ielasi restrains himself to short tracks (only one breaks four minutes), which prevents the music from becoming a wandering, pointless exercise; instead, the audience is given a snippet of how sound interacts in Ielasi's new environment and then we're moved right along. True to his legacy, Ielasi makes ear candy for the experimentally minded / Builds his layered, atmospheric music around rhythmic grids imposing a strong vertical development consisting of ons & offs, employing as much improvisation as Ielasi's previous work, but in a different way

  • Arvo Pärt : Works For Choir - LP (CuGate Classics, 2020)

  • CUGATE CLASSICS proudly presents: "Works For Choir" by ARVO PÄRT, one of the most important and influential composers of our time / ARVO PÄRT (born 1935 in Paide, Estonia) doesn't need to be introduced to anyone who has the slightest interest in classical music, and his audience reaches far beyond the xxx circles of symphony halls. After first serialistic compositions, "Credo" (1968) was a turning point in PÄRT's life and work, being the first piece carrying a religious title and expressing a creative crisis that PÄRT answered by lesser compositions and studying medieval and Renaissance music in search for a new musical language. In 1976 PÄRT returned with "Für Alina" and introduced his new (and self-developed) style that should become his trademark sound that made him the famous and honoured composer he is now: the socalled tintinnabuli / In 1984, after the Estonian composer and his family emigrated from the USSR and settled in Germany, the album "Tabula rasa" opened the next important chapter in PÄRT#s carrer: the ever continuing close relation to Manfred EICHER and his ECM label where many of the composer's works have since been released. "Works For Choir" presents several compositions for choir from the period from 1989 to 1991, recorded in Vilnius with the aweard winning Vilnius Municipal Choir Jauna Muzika under the artistic direction of Vaclovas Augustinas. For this reissue, all tracks have been remastered at D&M Berlin for best possible sound
