  • Don Cherry : Om Shanti Om - LP (Black Sweat, 2020)

  • Repress third edition / An amazing document of the life experiment that was the Organic Music Society. This super quality audio, recorded by RAI (the italian public broadcasting company) in 1976 for television, documents a quartet concert focused on vocals compositions and improvisations. Here, Don Cherry and his family-community’s musical belief emerges in its simplicity, with the desire to merge the knowledge and stimuli gained during numerous travels across the World in a single sound experience. Don's pocket-trumpet is melted with the beats of the great Brazilian percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, the Italian guitar of Gian Piero Pramaggiore, and the tanpura drone of Moki / A pure hippie aesthetic, like in an intimate ceremony, filters a magical encounter between Eastern and Western civiliziations, offering different suggestions of sound mysticism: natural acoustics in which individual instruments and voices are part of a wider pan-tribal consciousness. A desert Western landscape marries Asian and Latin atmospheres. Indigenous contributions with berimbau explorations find fossil sounds of rattles and clap-hands invocations. Influences of Indian mantra singing are combined with eternal African voices or with folkish-Latin guitar rhythms , while flute and drums evoke distant dances. In the Organic Music everything becomes an act of devotion and love, an ecstatic dwell in the dimension of a sacred free-rejoice

  • Will Guthrie, James Rushford : Real Real World - LP (Black Truffle, 2021)

  • Real Real World is the first collaborative effort from Nantes-based Australian drummer/percussionist Will Guthrie and Australian keyboardist/composer James Rushford / Primarily recorded in a fluid, spontaneous studio session in Nantes, with overdubs added later in Melbourne and Nantes, Real Real World presents five spacious, unhurried pieces that inhabit a unique sound world characterised by wheezing, half-voiced organ chords, chiming metal percussion, and eruptions of small sounds. Beginning with the eerily beautiful, shakuhachi-esque sound of Rushford performing on detuned portative organ, the opening title track is abruptly transformed by the entry of Guthrie’s sizzling cymbals, deep gong strikes, and rustling hand percussion. On the epic ‘Lumbering’, which occupies the majority of the record’s first side, organ chords define a space in which a kaleidoscopic succession of amplified thuds, chiming bells, rustled and dragged objects, and abruptly silenced clusters advance and recede in an oneiric blur, eventually making way for a passage of Guthrie’s virtuosic polyrhythms, itself unexpectedly overtaken by waves of melting fairground organ

  • Pain Jerk : Neurotten - LP (Urashima, 2021)

  • Recorded in 1996 and published the same year on the legendary Slaughter Productions by Marco Corbelli aka Atrax Morgue, in only 80 hand numbered copies in a special A5 tin-foil sleeve with translucent insert and instead some using a red cardboard insert accompanied by a small curved iron rod, similar to a dentist's tool and now it has become a worship object for the most avid collectors / The assault here is very high-end heavy: relentlessly aggressive. The sound severs and bleeds more than it beats and bludgeons. Side A is divided into two tracks, Gushcore and Teen-Wreckage, of incredible beauty. Nothing compares to the sounds emitted by vinyl grooves composed with a mysterious configuration of constantly flowing noise - always recorded live without overdubs. Devastating, unfriendly harsh noise: the hardest rock that is pierced by the sharpest diamond! With only one track on side B, which takes 23 minutes, we encounter one of most iconic compositions from his wide discography: Disembowel

  • Masonna : Filled With Unquestionable Feelings - LP (Urashima, 2021)

  • "Filled With Unquestionable Feelings" along with "Freak" is an ultra-rare cassette originally released in 1995 by Coquette in an edition of only 36 copies and now return for the first time in a stunning vinyl format fully remastered! / The two sides of the cassette / vinyl are completely different from each other. Side A can be considered a classic Masonna piece, where it reaches its full artistic maturity here. This side is very brash, earsplitting and mad. The distortion and effects on the vocals are top notch, they in combination with his awesome screaming create a complete audio assault. Remind also to his first period as Open your cunt and Like a vagina tapes. Everything is scraped, fast and beautiful and focuses an electrically overcharged universe, punctuating the thrilling and vocal sonorous power with some quite moments and brief interruptions, conferring a very particular dynamic to work / Side B is completely different. The voice disappears (or is no longer heard because it is covered or transformed by feedback). The structure is more compact and organized but eventually becomes far wilder, building up to pointillistic bleeps and dense layers of electronic fizz that unexpectedly cut to near-silence; these bear many uncanny resemblances to the simple melodic improvs and incessant ostinatos of Terry Riley

  • Aube : Grind Carve - LP (Urashima, 2021)

  • Grind Carve was recorded in 1996 and released in the same year by legendary Slaughter Productions by Marco Corbelli aka Atrax Morgue, in only about 80 copies in A6 sleeve / It is certainly one of the most complex works of Aube's early period. The first three tracks occupy the A side of the vinyl, while the fourth and last track covers the entire B side. Grind Carve stands out in Aube’s body of work, being one of the few to incorporate only one voltage controlled oscillator as source material / The result is an incredibly listenable expanse of deconstructed melody, long wavering tones, abides, noise and texture, that make it easily one of the most exciting works by the artist ever, emerging with a sound-sphinx that multiplies the listening interpretations; a sound that is characterized in form and timbre but at the same time is full of suggestions and summoning elements that the listener has to relate with. Rippling sheets of noise double as aesthetic decoding, and indications of coordinates within the cultural and temporary landscape, moving the oscillator and the acts of its making toward an image of something essential and fundamental

  • Repress deluxe edition with spot varnish sleeve and custom inner sleeve / The Innocents is the name of the second album by Natalie Mering, who performs as Weyes Blood. Its ten songs confront us with their truths. There is the beauty of Ms. Mering’s voice, whose strength across two vocal registers reveals a vulnerability belied by some of her lyrics. On all but one of the songs on The Innocents, her voice is the dominant quality, tracked in multi-part harmonies with herself. There is the semblance of training in her voice to get her to where she can sing today, or any number of devices we as listeners impose upon her, because most of us are not privy to a vocalist of such rare choral purity

Different from these elaborate albums, Cardamom Times was recorded onto reel-to-reel tape at Mering’s home studio in Rockaway Beach, New York / The songs of Cardamom Times demonstrate Mering’s reverence of devotional music and the avant-garde, channeling the domestic hymns of Sybille Baer through the lens of Baltimore’s experimental DIY scene; the minimal, melodic drones of Terry Riley accompanied by the voices of the Sacre Coeur; the confrontational words of Anaïs Nin along with the warm embrace of St. Augustine. With Cardamom Times, Mering invites listeners into that space of love and longing, struggle and change, surrounded by the decay of time that perpetually embraces us

Like The Alvaret Ensemble, this project is the result of some improvisations in a Church. But at not the same place / The FEAN project gets its inspiration from the ecological decay of peatland in the Dutch province Friesland and in other parts of Europe. Agriculture and peat extraction are threatening the landscape severely and with long term consequences. This forms the underlying thought for the improvised recording sessions, which were overseen by Jan Switters. Although the Piiptsjilling members are obviously used to perform and record together, adding the three Belgian guests (who didn’t play together before) added an extra dimension to the group’s dynamics, resulting in a concentrated yet playful series of improvisations, that were later mixed and edited for the project

  • Alain Goraguer : La Planète Sauvage Original Soundtrack - LP (Superior Viaduct, 2020)

  • Black vinyl reissue, includes spot UV tip-on jacket and printed inner sleeve / Animated sci-fi masterpiece La Planète Sauvage (a.k.a. Fantastic Planet), winner at Cannes Film Festival in 1973, is a bizarre and beautiful film. Towering blue-skinned figures, tiny humanoids in the midst of revolt, and drug-induced Tantric sex transport viewers to a truly magical setting. Composer Alain Goraguer creates an equally hypnotic score from a palette of effects-laden guitars, flutes, Fender Rhodes and strings. While the lush arrangements are reminiscent of Goraguer’s collaborations with Serge Gainsbourg in the 1960s, space-age synth flourishes suggest a more psychedelic era. Moody vignettes flow together in tense, slow-paced funk rhythms and Baroque textures / It comes as no surprise that La Planète Sauvage has been cited as an influence on contemporary artists such as French duo Air and American hip-hop producers J Dilla and Madlib. Gorgeous, interplanetary soundscapes resemble the surreal meeting point between Pink Floyd’s Obscured by Clouds and Broadcast’s Future Crayon. • Reissue with booklet / Every long life has its phases. Blue Navigator straddles the transitional between Michael Hurley’s Vermont house-sitter phase and his Virginia eight-track tape repairman phase. During the former, he’d string together low or no-rent residential situations, and venture into towns like Winooski on occasion to play with bands that’d have him. The combo accompanying him on this LP bring a sprightly, pre-country-politan twang to his sly, true tall tales, which make it a great introduction to Hurley’s skewed world view / But it’s actually been pretty hard to score, since the master tapes and Rooster Records’ back stock burned up in a fire in 1987. Since then, it’s been reissued on CD in a couple east Asian nations, and on eight track tape, a choice that tips its hat to where Hurley went next. This halcyon collection of tracks draws on a wider palette of sounds, adding strings and piano, to dive deeper into the sound bath of Johnson’s meditative music / The Cinder Grove is a profound, affecting statement on the nature of loss and irreplaceability as well as a major addition to the canon of Johnson’s work. It's a suite of requiems for lost places. Many of the spaces that once fostered affordable living and creative work now only exist in sonic memory, like the echoes of ghosts. Like much of the California landscape in recent years, some of these spaces having succumbed to fire. Others, to the equally inexorable forces of gentrification. While his 2017 LP Balsams was intended to provide the listener with a space for respite and calm—even healing—The Cinder Grove seeks to remember what has been lost while celebrating the resilience of the human spirit and the natural world / In making The Cinder Grove, Johnson dug through archival recordings from Oakland DIY performance spaces to digitally extract their reverb and echo qualities. He then applied these effects—as well as the digitally modeled reverberation of a redwood forest—to the tracks on The Cinder Grove, allowing the pieces to bask in the lush virtual spaces, and in the process realized that these sonic re-constructions can only ever be approximations. We try to make spaces what we want them to be, whether in memory or in the material present

  • Fatboy CD case with 16 pp. booklet / Created between 1985 and 1993, Trilogie de la Mort is considered by many to be Éliane Radigue’s masterpiece. An extended sonic meditation on death informed by Radigue’s dedicated engagement with Tibetan Buddhism, the piece is made up of three hour-long ARP 2500 synthesizer compositions: Kyema, Kailasha, and Koumé. Kyema was inspired by the Bardo Thodol, or Tibetan Book of the Dead, with six sections reflecting the six bardos, or intermediate states of life and death which constitute the existential continuity of a being. Shortly after finishing the piece in 1988, Radigue learned of a tragic car accident which took the life of her son Yves / Two weeks later, she began work on Kailasha, named after the most sacred of the Tibetan mountains, Mount Kailash. Although an actual visit to the site, considered to be the center of the world in Tibetan cosmology, was beyond Radigue’s capacity, the piece functions both as a sonic pilgrimage and a memorial to her deceased son and was completed in 1991. A subsequent trip to Nepal for the cremation of her Tibetan master convinced Radigue of the transcendental aspect of death as part of a perpetual becoming, lending a heightened clarity to Koumé, which she finished in 1993, completing the trilogy. Trilogie de la Mort was premiered in November 1993 at the monastery at Cimiez in Nice where the sound from hidden loudspeakers seemed, according to minimalist composer Tom Johnson, to ooze out of the walls

  • Beatriz Ferreyra, Natasha Barrett : Souvenirs Cachés / Innermost - LP (Persistence Of Sound, 2021)

  • It would be hard to find a better-suited combination of contemporary acousmatica on one record. Beatriz Ferreyra and Natasha Barrett are known for their intense exploration of the movement of sounds through space. Ferreyra has been at the cutting edge of developments in acousmatic music and sound morphology since she joined Pierre Schaeffer’s small team of researchers in his tape experiments at the GRM Paris studios in 1963. She continues to compose and perform internationally / Schaeffer’s concept of ‘allure’ (the unique quality of any sound according to how it behaves) features as an influence in Barrett’s development of the concept of the ‘gait’ of her sounds, identified by how they move, change shape and occupy space rather than by their source. Her multi-dimensional installations and concerts have featured in museums and festivals globally since the 1990s. Ferreyra and Barrett share an interest in musique concrète over pure electronics. Ferreyra prefers the ‘aliveness’ of natural or environmental sound recordings, and Barrett talks of ‘hovering in that point between something from the real-world and the totally abstract.’ / Both composers focus on recreating the most natural listening experience possible during performance. For Barrett, this is a question of using higher order ambisonics (the encoding or recording of spatial information which is then decoded across multi-loudspeaker configurations). For Ferreyra, it is a question of playing her stereo recordings live from the mixing console across eight or more loudspeakers depending on the space

Linear Movement is Belgian mastermind Peter Bonne (A Split-Second, Twilight Ritual, Autumn) joined by Peter Koutstaal, and Lieve Van Steerteghem on vocals. • Sympathy Nervous : Sympathy Nervous - LP (Minimal Wave, 2018)

  • Translucent vinyl remastered reissue / Minimal Wave is honored to present a reissue of Sympathy Nervous’ pioneering debut album originally released in 1980 on Vanity Records out of Japan. Sympathy Nervous was Yosihumi Niinuma’s lifelong project which he started in his Tokyo living room in 1979. Through Sympathy Nervous, Niinuma was able to channel his energy into what he loved – building his own synthesizers and speakers from scratch. Niinuma was inspired by German Krautrock and through his music created intense proto-techno soundscapes. Now finally available for the first time ever, remastered from the original tapes used for the 1980 release, is the timeless masterpiece in its entirety / This is a momentous occasion and we are happy that Niinuma and his family have entrusted us with this gem of an album. • Das Ding : Missing Tapes - LP (Minimal Wave, 2016)

  • Creamy yellow vinyl / For Missing Tapes, Minimal Wave has managed to unearth a wealth of previously unheard gems from Dutch electro trailblazer Danny Bosten. Dark electro diggers may be aware of Bosten's early 1980s work, which was initially self-released on cassette, but has also been re-issued since by Minimal Wave and others. The material here was recorded in the same period and rediscovered some years back by the producer. It's similar in style, as you'd expect, with Bosten variously exploring otherworldly electro, sci-fi leaning Italo-disco, stylish, new wave synth workouts, and throbbing proto-techno. What impresses most, though, is the seeming freshness of the material; it might be 35 years old, but it still sounds formidably futuristic

  • White vinyl, handnumbered on backcover / Minimal Wave's latest must-have release shines a light on the largely forgotten work of early '80s Belgian misfits The Misz, a duo who recorded and released off-kilter new-wave pop on limited edition cassettes via a variety of obscure labels. Their trademark sound - created using cheap and little-known synthesizers, lo-fi drum machines, effects-laden guitars and stylish vocals - remains hugely alluring, with this ten-track collection offering a superb introduction to their work. We're particularly enjoying the effects-laden trip that is "It Ain't All Garbage", the doomy shuffle of "A La Recherche De BL" and the alien synths and weirdo vocals of "Zastava Home", but there are plenty of other tracks across the LP worthy of lavish praise

  • Oppenheimer Analysis : New Mexico - 2xLP (Minimal Wave, 2016)

  • Remastered reissue, black vinyl / For fans of minimal wave and DIY electronic pop, Oppenheimer Analysis's self-released 1982 debut cassette, New Mexico - little more than an extended demo cassette - has become something of a collector's item. While it has been reissued digitally since, it never received a vinyl release. In tribute to Martin Lloyd (the other half of the duo, alongside Andy Oppenheimer), who passed away recently, Minimal Wave has decided to make New Mexico available on wax for the first time. While the sound quality is appropriately dusty (it was badly recorded in the first place, of course), the music remains magical - bubbling, evocative, left-of-centre leftfield pop created with home-made synthesizers, modular hardware and little else. It's no wonder many consider it a classic album (even if was never officially released first time round)

Their debut album, You Liked Me Five Minutes Ago, was released in 2009 to wide international acclaim. “The basic strategy of pairing the expressive energy of free jazz with a sturdy sense of groove has yielded something potent and self-contained” (New York Times). Between this and Defeat there´s been five albums, including collaborations with Jim O´Rourke (Unreleased?, 2011) and Oren Ambarchi (In The Mouth A Hand, 2012) / No two Fire! records sound the same, but with Defeat they have taken their biggest leap so far, with Gustafsson giving the flute a prominent place in the sound image, a surprising and most successful move, his both expressive and ornamental approach given ample room to breathe, especially on the two long tracks bookending the album. In places more subdued than on previous efforts, but with the distinctive bass figures and hypnotic mood fully intact. There are some lively stretches with guests Goran Kajfes and Mats Aleklint, bringing to mind their big band offshoot Fire! Orchestra, albeit on a much smaller scale

  • Phew, Tatsuo Kondo, John Duncan : Backfire of Joy - LP (Black Truffle, 2021)

  • Black Truffle is thrilled to announce Backfire of Joy, a previously unheard recording from Phew, John Duncan and Kondo Tatsuo, documenting a concert at Tokyo’s Hosei University in 1982. Though the fertile exchange of ‘zines, tapes and records between the Japanese underground and the Los Angeles Free Music Society meant the artists were familiar with each other’s work, this performance (occurring on Duncan’s first visit to Japan) was their first meeting and only performance as a trio / Duncan is heard on his signature shortwave radio set-up, while Kondo performs on synth, tape loops and echo-drenched piano, providing a spacious backdrop for Phew’s astonishing performance of spontaneous, free-associative song moving between Japanese and English. A testament to the unhinged exploration of the 1980s experimental underground, the trio careen wildly between crashing percussive tape loops, deluges of shortwave noise, insistent piano figures and playful synth melodies. On the B side, we are treated to a remarkable ten minute sequence moving organically from spaced-out synth and radio textures to a stunning finale of improvised balladry centred on piano and voice, unexpectedly broken up by electronic interjections. Beautifully recorded in crunchy vintage fidelity, Backfire of Joy arrives accompanied by archival photographs and newly authored liner notes from all three participants

  • Julius Eastman : Femenine - CD (Sub Rosa, 2021)

  • 'The end sounds like the angels opening up heaven... Should we say euphoria?" This is Julius Eastman himself, speaking about Femenine, a piece that remains as a big and slow breathing, with something informal driving thelistener to a near-hypnosis state. An experiment / There was some for John Cage, then came Christian Wolff, and finally Morton Feldman, from this school in New York. Only Julius Eastman remained outside the game, the last figure, the most solitary and enigmatic - undoubtedly also one of the most powerful. And it is this power that is revealed through these recordings. In the 1970s and 1980s, Eastman was one of the very few African-Americans to gain recognition in the New York avant-garde music scene. He was politically committed, a figure of queer culture and a solar and solitary poet whose melancholy influenced his genius as well as his tragic destiny : suffering from various addictions, declared missing, actually homeless. During Winter of 1981-82, he got deported from his apartment by the police, who destroyed most of what he owned - including scores and recordings. He was found dead in 1990, on the streets of Buffalo, after years of vagrancy / Performed by Ensemble 0 and Aum Grand Ensemble, variable geometry group created in 2004. It interprets the compositions of its members and pieces by other composers. • Judith Hamann : Shaking Studies - LP (Blank Forms Editions, 2020)

  • For her first album releases as a soloist, nomadic Australian cellist and composer Judith Hamann presents two collections of her sonic inquiries into shaking and humming. Her LP, "Shaking Studies," is a collection of iterative cello performance that foregrounds shaking as a generative subject. In addition to an arsenal of techniques for registrable shaking, Hamann’s conception of the term emphasizes micro and macro pulsing, including tremors, vibrato, wolf tones, and complex partial activity / Hamann begins with a sphygmological reading of the pulse of her cello, inciting it to shake audibly and visually as a symbiotic basis for determining the rate of her own left hand’s tremor and consequent direction of resonant frequencies. Following a thorough harmonic investigation of her shaking practice in two parts, she directs us to look outwards, combining beating chordal structures with electronics and recordings of real world shaking. From inner pulse to more macrocosmic quaking, Hamann’s alternative conception of shaking rejects measurement and regularity, order and control, instead alluding to a more responsive and intuitive mode of convulsive sounding

  • Bill Nace, Graham Lambkin : The Dishwashers - LP (Open Mouth, 2020)

  • Printed on old style tip on Stoughton sleeve. Bill Nace and Graham Lambkin first played together in Fall 2018, in Kentucky, behind plastic. In that performance, they sometimes played the same instrument at the same time. Time passed, then they recorded this album in Fall 2019, in London. I was told that an acoustic guitar, a cymbal and tapes were used in the recording and I have no reason to doubt that / There are also voices, birds, a room, the outside world...; a bow is used. Bill & Graham both deal in different kinds of tension & discomfort and while this album is both like & unlike what I've heard from either of them, it is somewhat remarkably laid-back. Though there are separate and distinct tracks, they flow into each other organically. Not without some jagged interruptions - in fact, many of the tracks "announce" themselves with a sudden cough, squeak or scrape - but the field recording aspects (passing cars, a siren, some banter) act as a leitmotif holding things together, adding a casual ambiance that "almost" invites a casual listen / But it is deceptive in that way. It is not a hermetic recording. As much as it doesn't exclude the sounds of the outside world, it also lies open to interpretation. Themes recur just enough to create a connective tissue that frames some of the more seemingly disparate elements. Brief fragments of conversation invite the mind to try to understand and create its own narrative; a pizzicato, modal folksong played on guitar, then played back on tape at the end of Side A has a reprise midway through Side B; hints of ancient music are bowed or chanted... This is not a tapestry without thread, but you've also got to bring some of your own

In 1952, Folkways Records published the legendary six-LP series entitled the Anthology of American Folk Music, compiled by eccentric record collector, filmmaker, artist, and anthropologist Harry Smith. Many historians cite Smith's reissue, with its recordings of country, blues, and gospel music from the 1920s and '30s, and its booklet containing idiosyncratic liner notes, esoteric artwork, and handmade design as a major impetus for the folk music revival of the 1950s and '60s. 68 years later, The Harry Smith B-Sides offers both a resonant listening experience and the closing of a collector's circle / Sequenced in the identical order that Smith created, this new box set offers the flip-side of each record selected by Smith for the original Anthology of American Folk Music. • Following the release of lo-fi electronic masterpiece I Don't Remember Now / I Don't Want To Talk About It and his brilliant follow-up Plaster Falling, Cincinnati-based artist John Bender began assembling his third and last album, Pop Surgery, in late 1982 / While all of Bender's work draws from intimate home recordings – featuring the artist alone with various keyboards, analogue sequencers and tape delays – Pop Surgery remains the one that perhaps best distills his arrant deconstruction of the "pop" concept. These twelve frenetic tracks, meticulously stitched together with dubbed-out vocals and disjointed drum machines, stretch the boundaries of bedroom electronics / Bender would forgo the handmade LP sleeves typical of his Record Sluts imprint. The cover depicts an imposing scrapyard crane, ready to pick up discarded objects with its bright red electromagnet, while the center labels détourn Columbia's classic '70s style

  • Grotta Veterano : Unfolding Drama - CD (Fluid Audio, 2021)

  • A series of solitary improvisations make up the fabric of Unfolding Drama. The term ‘solitary’ is at the heart of its being, as the music is uniform in its tone, shape, and appearance. All of its music stems from one single tone, cut from the same cloth. Unfolding Drama’s tracks are similar in tonality and tempo, which makes it feel like a biographical release, and in turn leads to a cohesive sound. Its music is composed of chapters, and they all detail one life, a single childhood, which grows up and changes with the seasons while still occupying the same body, personality, and soul / The solitary is often thought of in a negative light, but Grotta Veterano’s solitary and spacious music unfurls with patience, and perhaps even kindness. Scene after scene, its old melodies form a strong dialect with memory, looking back on a departed youth and an era turned to dust. The music plays out from the same house, echoing out from the same piano. These quiet sounds are built around space. In fact, space and distance ‘create the architecture of each individual track and of the album in its entirety’. What follows is a record of composure and grace, sensitive in not only remembering and embracing the past and where it came from, but continuing to echo it / Made by hand, 1 x vintage (circa:1880-1950) hardback clothbound book (re-assembled / screwed / bolted together into CD covers, 1 x glass mastered CD (Not CDR), 15 - 20 pages of writing / images, 20 x A7 polaroid prints on luxury uncoated paper (designed by Craig Tattersall), 1 x library card, 2 x vintage family photographs, 1 x vintage book-mark, 1 x vintage numbered photo negative, 1 x antique 35mm glass slide, 1 x Incense, stamped / hand numbered / scented, all of the above rests inside stitched / sealed glassine bags, download code (includes 35 PDF prints), made with love...

  • A striking reappraisal of his earlier work as well as a defiantly vivacious dedication to his former collaborator Mika Vainio, Ballades sur lac gelé sees producer Franck Vigroux deliver a deeply inventive set of genre-twisting electronica. ‘Drive’ bursts open from rhythmic chips to an industrial-electro strut, as discordant tones spread across the mix with the force of many traction engines. • GAS : Rausch - 2xLP (Kompakt, 2021)

  • Having taken just shy of a 20 year breather between Pop and last year's fabulous Narkopop, Wolfgang Voigt has clearly entered a new phase of influence as Rausch not only sees him channelling an entirely new session of killer material, Rausch also finds GAS moving deeper into the lagoons of darkness that have only previously been hinted at within his muted, repetitious sound-world / We can't say for sure but we wouldn't be surprised if Voigt has been submerged deep in the catalogues of 09/10-era Dettmann, SCB and Frozen Border as well as The Death Of Rave era V/Vm. Half-remembered recollections of this era of blinding white-label dub techno 12"s and experimental long players drift around the edges of Rausch. These ghosts are seemingly a guidebook for GAS to direct us through a night land of deliciously darkside drones and drums, one that appears to pull equal influence from the shadowy end of the dubstep and jungle continuum. Try if you can, to imagine The Caretaker's memories of his years in the heady North of England rave scene slowly dissolving into a struggle to recollect kick drum patterns amid a sea of exhaling smoke-filled lungs / While there are thick reverberations of 2017's Narkopop and before it Zauberberg, Pop, Konigsforst, and Oktember still hanging in the air, the memories of those past recordings are distorted into haunted new shapes that at one moment call to be recognised, then simply vanish within the hall of mirrors-style skeleton of Wolfgang Voigt's solitary sound world. In the hands of GAS, techno is transported to those times many don't know, moving to a land long after the club has closed and begun to crumble. To experience Rausch is to enter into the dark side of GAS

  • "Island People" is a new band project consisting of mastering engineer Conor Dalton, Grammy award winning producer David Donaldson, musician and DJ Graeme Reedie and guitarist Ian "Chippy" MacLennan. On their first self-titled record, they present their collaborative work that evolved over the past three years. Being based in different cities, namely Berlin and Glasgow, files had to be exchanged back and forth between the band members in order to create tracks. For their delicate sound structures, field recordings and other sound sources were heavily processed and rendered unrecognizable / Layer after layer, the tracks came into being quite naturally, not only reflecting their continuous way of working, but also incorporating their different and individual backgrounds: "During the whole creation of the album, we never realized our actions were quickly leading us into forming "Island People", we were too busy having fun, making music and sharing ideas." The result of their collaboration is a timeless music that is as open as a natural phenomenon, developing a certain feeling of euphoria over time. All in all, "Island People" is a pure listening record in the best tradition of ambient

  • Kyoka : SH - 12" (Raster-Noton, 2016)

  • Inspired by her residencies at Stockholm‘s EMS studios, Kyoka's new EP "SH" might be her most experimental record so far. The 4 tracks presented on this EP can be described as snapshots having a spontaneous character as they were edited and recorded during various sound checks and performances. The results are not less typical of Kyoka‘s chaotic sound with unforeseen shifts in beat, unpredicted repetitions and surprising clicks and bops. The rather slow and gloomy opener "Susurrus" is followed by a somehow dubby and strongly up-tempo track, "Smash/Hush", that culminates in a repetitive and hypnotic swirl. The B-side, on the other hand, continues with a rather slamming track and is rounded of with "Shush", a track that loses some speed, but not complexity through its diverse breaks and cuts

  • Vladislav Delay : Espoo - 12" (Raster-Noton, 2012)

  • Vladislav Delay’s EP "Espoo" features two new conceptual, rhythm-intense tracks. whereas the groove of the opener "Olari" derives from a sound loop which is manipulated by filters and echoes and finally brings forth the intensifying beat, the reverse is done with "Kolari" on the b-side. starting from an impulsive, staccato beat, a sound carpet is woven by means of modifiers which gradually shape a permanent vacation-like melody, close to Terry Riley‘s minimalistic concepts. Both tracks share a linear increase in density, and because of their break with the common four-four time, they create a certain folkloric atmosphere. like with "Vantaa" (r-n136), the experienced music producer Vladislav Delay continues his search for dance-floor compatible, yet unique and fresh music

  • Dasha Rush : Sleepstep - Sonar Poems For My Sleepless Friends - 2x12" (Raster-Noton, 2015)

  • "Sleepstep" is the first collaboration between Raster and Dasha Rush. The record‘s subtitle "Sonar Poems For My Sleepless Friends" describes its underlying concept – "Sleepstep" is a trip through electronically alienated micro-compositions and sound collages that, interwoven with text passages, aim at creating a dream-like atmosphere. The stations of this journey are striving for oblivion of time, an immersion, a drifting in universal states – death, life, birth, grief, desire. The titles often appear to be raw sketches, fugitive, surreal short stories that rather want to break open than execute / The musical arrangement, in this context, can be described as rather subtle and fragile. Though electronically manipulated, no production technique is pushing itself to the fore. And though clichés are not dreaded, "Sleepstep", as a result, stays away from being cliché. The sonar poems for her sleepless friends are feminine, subtle and personal reports. A musical dream journey in the form of a classical concept record – an album that also stands in the tradition of ambient music. Dasha Rush is already known as a techno DJ and producer. Here on "Sleepstep", she celebrates her alter ego. The CD version came with a 32-pages booklet that also showed her photographic interest and included the aforementioned poems written by herself

At the core of the album is the music that inspired them, the conclusion of countless recordings listened to in their formative years that ultimately result in a life-long devotion to electronic music: from the dance floor to primal anger and self-annihilating noise, to transcendental, ambient escapism and intense self-reflexive sonic layering. The result is a soundtrack for this apocalyptic time, an uncompromising reflection on the state of mankind and its uncertain future – underscored by a sense of religious and secular demise referenced in track titles, samples, and soundscapes scattered throughout the album. • Kangding Ray : The Pentaki Slopes - 12" (Raster-Noton, 2012)

  • The tale of the mythic Pentaki mountain has been engraved on a two-sided circular piece of wax. The north face of the peak is steep, abrasive, and has been the subject of many legends in the region. It is said that whoever would manage to climb it would find a plateau, leading to a place called "the single source of truth". Considered as the ultimate goal by both psychedelic gurus and database optimization corporations, and as an ideal retirement destination for a couple of lost souls in search for coherence and objectivity, the source diffuses endless loops of haunted voices, apparently sampled from a discarded call center, running low on power, encouraging listeners to shorten cycles, deliver requests and improve user experience / It is also said that anyone climbing from the south side would never reach the summit or find his way to the plateau, and would always end up on a lower altitude than where he started. This topographical anomaly is probably the reason why the south face of the Pentaki has always been favorited by locals, with its sunny weather and its luxurious vegetation flourishing along the soft downward slope, leading to a slow and peaceful end

  • Gomila Park : Ununoctium - 12" (Raster-Noton, 2015)

  • The penultimate issue of Raster-Noton's unun series features "Gomila Park", a new project by the two swedish musicians Martin Rössel and Carl Michael Von Hausswolff that started in spring 2013 in palma de mallorca. On their first EP released as a duo, they present three rather unconventional and diverse tracks. “Leibniz“, for example, is characterized by a heavy rock attitude with lots of distortion and screaming guitar riffs / The b-side on the other hand, including the tracks "Calculus" and "Ramon Llull", is the more experimental part. Considering only the track titles, “Gomila Park“ is a homage to two of the first mathe- maticians and philosophers that helped developing the binary system and, generally speaking, the digital world. but despite all that, "Gomila Park" is also a matured piece of work that was held in trust for at least two years. it's once more an inspection of a fundamental possibility of music, a reference to the past. similar to mika vainio's "Vandal" EP, "Gomila Park" echoes the tradition of rock (music) and is thus the counterpart of a younger, historically unbur- dened generation of producers like Ueno Masaaki or Kyoka

  • Aatma is the re-imagining of my recent journey into Mumbai through sound, place, and moment with a Nagra SD recorder. The work was composed immediately upon my return while these things were, in a very real sense, still resonating in my mind / Part 1 is the arrival. Echoes of the shanka can be heard from a distant past across the Arabian Sea, as waves wash debris ashore and push you deep into the tumult of the city. Here you may experience the current of life and ride old trains into spectral shadows of obscure & eccentric Bollywood and devotional vinyl records from a local music boutique. Part 2 is a precarious walk across the narrow causeway leading to Haji Ali Dargah, a 600-year-old mosque only accessible at low tide. It is difficult to reach the mosque without being taken aback by the disparate forms of life unfolding on the way in, both in the sky and on foot as can be heard here. Part 3, the final section, is a departure from the hustle of the city altogether. This section delves into the droning, colorful, and percussive instruments with their richly complex and evolving timbres. It culminates in a return to daily shanty life on the beach accompanied by transistor radios blasting modern bollywood music / Aatma is a tribute to Mumbai’s wonderful people and culture, and in the hope of representing different and altered states of listening, living, and celebrating. I hope you find this journey as inspiring as it was for me

As a statement against capital punishment. It was (and even still is nowadays) a delicate and ambitious plan. Bernard Szajner did it, in 1980, after watching an Amnesty International documentary. And stakes were high: at that point in his life Szajner has spent the majority of the 70’s doing light and visuals for bands as Magma, Gong, Pink Floyd and The Who. In the meantime he created his own instrument, the ‘Syringe’, aka the first laser harp, and made his debut as a musician under the Z moniker with ‘Visions of Dune’ / When listening to ‘Some Deaths Take Forever’ in 2020 it’s hard to believe it was recorded already four decades ago: the melancholic piano theme and the metallic synth riffs of opener ‘Welcome to Death Row’ set the tone for a mind blowing audio journey which at one moment echoes the vibe of early 80’s gloom funk and derailed krautrock drenching into pulsating proto Detroit techno and on the other hand sounds like the blueprint for a futuristic electronic music scene in the years to come. The influence and the impact of ‘Some Deaths Take Forever’ is also still vibrating: Carl Craig mentioned it as his all time favorite album in Future Mag, the signature sound of Oneohtrix Point Never feels almost like a not so hidden tribute and the killer sci fi electronics of tracks ‘Ressurector’ or ‘A Kind Of Freedom’ resonates through the discography of Air and Daft Punk, to name a few

  • In 2017 I released an album with a big band (at least for my standards) of 12 musicians, the band was called Abschattungen and the album «The Ear Cannot Be Filled With Hearing ». Abschattungen in german means «shadowing» , or »shading». To adumbrate. Aufheben, always in German, means « to keep » (material things) and « to abolish » (immaterial ones). It also means « to raise ». And « to reduce ». These 2 terms are the base of my research on german phylosophy and abstract funk, mixing/finding threads in between these 2 «concepts» is one of my recent obsessions. « Reflection Is Circular » is the ideal continuation of « The Ear Cannot.... », being Aufheben the « reduced » version of Abschattungen

  • Giovanni Di Domenico : Downtown Ethnic Music - LP (Die Schachtel, 2021)

  • 180g marble vinyl and housed in a pro-printed inner sleeve and jacket, contained in a silk-screen PVC sleeve / Downtown Ethnic Music encounters Di Domenico reimagining the future of urban music, pluming the mysterious and emotive depths of self, to arrive at vision of sonorous utopia, radically divergent from those of the past. Hybridizing numerous forms of musical practice, while making a conceptual nod to Jon Hassell’s notion of the "fourth world”, as well as the cross-temporal transnationalism of Roberto Musci, Aktuala, Futuro Antico, and the Third Ear Band, Di Domenico’s vision of democracy - rendered through the creative metaphors of sound - is a true to life, bristling conflict, as open-ended as it is ordered, and as dramatic and tense as it is beautiful, playful, and refined / A colorful tapestry of ideas, experiences, histories, and reference points, woven from a pallet of electronics, synthesis, and various acoustic sources - the intervening rhythms of drummer João Lobo, vocals by Pak Yan Lau and Patshiva CIE women choir, the horns of Ananta Roosens and Jordi Grognard etc. - across the length of Downtown Ethnic Music, the boundaries between idiom, expressive concept, collective, and individual blur, giving way to a visionary, forward-thinking rendering of electroacoustic music, that subtly reminds us of the social and political potential of art. Seamlessly incorporating bubbling electronic abstraction, sprawling ambience and long tones, throbbing kosmische, acoustic free improvisation, and the human voice, Giovanni Di Domenico’s Downtown Ethnic Music represents a high-water mark in an already astounding career

  • Audrey Lauro, Giotis Damianidis : Dark Ballads - LP (Silent Water, Mr. Nakayasi, 2021)

  • Dark Ballads is the obvious title of this LP, as if this music pre-existed the duo that, without any other choice, was formed around it. Since then, Giotis Damianidis and Audrey Lauro have continued to advance along this straight line that runs through their inner landscapes. Their music creates a "stretched" emotional space, which evolves in slow motion and captures the fragility of the tone, the tension of the path. Each stage of the record is a mineral evocation of the intimate: Obsidienne, Almandin, Béryl Rouge. The same "intimate" that is the only thing that matters when playing and recording such music. This LP has been recorded as you listen to it, from top till toe, nothing has been changed/added/subtracted. This is the pure essence of an intimate meeting

  • Loren Mazzacane Connors, Oren Ambarchi : Leone - LP (Family Vineyard, 2021)

  • Packaged in eye-popping floral graphics by Marissa Huber and pressed on black vinyl / Leone' is the first meeting of electric guitarists Loren Connors and Oren Ambarchi. It's somewhat surprising it's taken this long as these two are connected by ongoing collaborators, like Jim O'Rourke and Keiji Haino. Connors, for more than 40 years, developed an iconic sound tethered to radical permutations of the blues. Ambarchi's own multi-decade transfiguration of the guitar inhabits a rarefied realm of abstracted tones and dissonance pitched between improvisation and composition / This album, like its title, is a sum of parts: solo performances by Connors and Ambarchi bookend a duo. On 'Lorn,' Connors unravels an aggressive ternary form, with an opening section wrapped in distortion and extreme phasing that contrasts against ghostly, distant single notes. Ambarchi's 'Nor,' supplants a guitar performance with melodic, shifting organ-like tones that are swallowed into a fluttering, glitchy squall. On 'Ronnel,' the duo, each audio landscape created by the two slowly rotates and overlaps the other, as if each is drawing the others' portrait on opposite sides of a translucent sheet. Recorded November 2017 by Bob Bellerue at the Issue Project Room. Mixed and mastered by Joe Talia and cut by Carl Saff. Cover illustration by Marissa Huber

The soundtrack to the film, seen here, is without doubt Hauschka´s most brooding, deep work and we find him in a much darker mood in contrast to his Oscar-nominated works for Hollywood films. The variation of cello, prepared piano, poems, sound effects and occasional synth create a ghostly sound as if a shadow was slowly moving through the Scottish winter. Collapse in the sense of this album refers to a buckling of structure, of multiple layers suddenly without division, and points to the overall experience of redrawing of inside/outside public/private/social spaces and perception of time in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Perhaps I’m being overly utopian here, but I now think collapse is not synonymous with disaster, it can instead be generative, creative, a way of making a new story or experience, a way of revealing, or retelling our perception of the world."

  • Another indispensable compendium of the great french experimental artist's musical opera. With this 4 LPs of archival materials Ariel Kalma ideally retrace the map of his own path and spiritual journey during the '70s. Some of music contained in Sarasvati Planet Ariel, Planet Air, Ascend Descend and Astral Cathedral are born as sound environments for group therapy sessions that carrying healing, trance and relaxation / The occult and arcane music of Kalma awakens consciousness, expands chakras, sculpts memory indelibly, seems to encompass all the emotional aspects of the Universe and brings us back to the archetypal moments of Creation. What impresses is the variety of atmospheric stimuli, the richness source of inspiration and compositional mastery. The solemn, triumphal and liturgical, meditative and ascending tone of celestial chapel organs and harmonium, the darkness of Farfisa and Yamaha Ps-30 lunar and spectral sequences, the exotic oriental breath of circular dances transfigured and dissolving by the specular shapes of the Wasp Synth... everything converges to the purity abyssal of eternity sound. The melodic and harmonic phrases of sax always reveal a deep song, while the solar blow of flute gives elegiac moments of Debussyan flavor as bucolic recalls of fauns from Edens lost / We are struck by equinoxial and solstitial lights, in perfect balance between flares and shadows, Nature and galactic procession. Kalma's sensitive Ear is expressionist, almost a possible scenario for astral architectural utopias of visionaries such as Hablik, Taut, Steiner or Poelzig; it absorbs and re-reads in a personal way some insights of the cosmic psychedelia of the early ‘70s such as K. • Masonna : Freak - LP (Urashima, 2020)

  • Freak is an ultra-rare cassette originally released in 1995 by Coquette in an edition of 36 copies in a special gold paper and now return for the first time in a flabbergasting vinyl format fully remastered! / This mature work is very brash, earsplitting and mad. The distortion and effects on the vocals are top notch, they in combination with his awesome screaming create a complete audio assault. Sometimes pleading sobs are heard. And they are all, regularly, philologically broken, retouched, stiffened. And they mingle in the vortex. Or at most they come back to be slaughtered a little more only to be thrown back again, finally in the centrifuge. Everything is scraped, fast and beautiful and focuses an electrically overcharged universe, punctuating the thrilling and vocal sonorous power with some quite moments and brief interruptions, conferring a very particular dynamic to this work / Originally released as single side tape C30, this vinyl edition divided into two parts of about fifteen minutes each and comes with A3 size poster with Masonna in "action pose”. Freak is an absolutely astounding piece of work by one of the great pioneers of extreme noise from Japan! This is bound to be a revelation for anyone and it can’t be missed!

  • Merzbow : Rainbow Electronics - 2xLP (Urashima, 2020)

  • Gatefold cover that faithfully reproduces the original art work plus a 12" size insert. If you looking for a great starter title by Merzbow, an amazing piece of art, or something to get high to, this double LP is perfect! / Originally released on CD in 1990 by Alchemy Records as part of the Good Alchemy Series, Rainbow Electronics marks the pinnacle of Merzbow's late 80’s noise phase. Selected and transformed from about 21 hours tape of primitive raw material recorded during three years (1987-1990) in 14 fragments lasting about 74 minutes, this monumental work is an aural trip through a cold plotted universe of intergalactic space ships and golden celestial bodies. Remastered in December 2019 and split into four parts directly by the artist for the double vinyl version it opens up with a slow, kind of creepy tempo, reaching from dirty harsh noise flows coupled with eerie reverbed screeches and scrapes of iron objects. Noise and blasts come from every angle, and all you can do is sit and take it / Then continues with solid drumbeats briefly emerging from the static and disappearing just as quickly, again long stretches of subdued electronic drones buzzing along sleepily and the occasional sudden shift of noise into something more violent, though it all happens kind of slowly and gradually. A truly mesmerizing  and immersive body of sound and its intense finish is something of pure artform

  • From Ajanta to Lhasa' is an intense and unique work with mystical and exotic references that sees the light for the first time in 40 years, and find its place among the must-haves artifacts of the Italian experimental/minimalist scene. In 1979, upon returning from a two month trip to India, Arturo Stàlteri, a pianist of undisputed value and founder member of italian prog duo Pierrot Lunaire, withdraws in his studio to set this strong experience to music. References to the overseas minimalism by Terry Riley, Philip Glass and La Monte Young are obvious, as well as clear hints to Popol Vuh / The suite from which the album takes its title is inspired by the days Stàlteri spent in Ajanta exploring the cave paintings which made a great impression on him. The days he spent in Goa can be found in "Floating Moon", specifically an evening when a giant moon shrouded in fog, looking like a huge ball floating on the ocean, magically appeared. 'From Ajanta to Lhasa' is the result of a search for an inner dimension free from the conditioning of Western civilization

  • Joana Guerra : Chão Vermelho - LP (Miasmah, 2020)

  • Brick red vinyl / "Chão Vermelho" (Red Floor) is a collection of ritualistic, lamenting pieces influenced by the increasingly dry ground of the surrounding area of central Portugal from where cellist and singer Joana Guerra resides. An environment of experimentation and risk transports us to an apocalyptic scenario in which the extreme dryness of a ground where nothing can grow anymore is accompanied by dramatic, theatrical compositions. As a murmur or a pagan prayer, the pieces evoke the ever imminent possibility of regeneration: "The name of the album is inspired by the area where I live, with muddy soil. It fascinates me a lot, although the drought and its cracks make me feel terrible", explains Joana. Perhaps because the floor covering the earth, like a skin of deep cracks, attests to the tiredness, the wrinkles, of civilization / Small blue-metallic flowers, a white animal about to go extinct, rare stones that only exist in two latitudes, the colour red as a warning sign, ecological sound, but also as a sign of renewal, as in women in their blood cycles. All of this makes up the universe of Joana Guerra's 'Chão Vermelho'. And as long as the mycelium feels our presence, perhaps there is hope for this ground and for such a woman who in her cycles of renewal is too earthy to be holy

  • Kassel Jaeger : Meith - LP (Black Truffle, 2020)

  • Black Truffle is pleased to present Meith, a new composition in two parts from prolific composer/theorist François Bonnet. Usually operating under his Kassel Jaeger moniker, Bonnet is a major figure in contemporary electronics and electro-acoustic music, collaborating with artists such as Lucy Railton, Jim O’Rourke, and Stephen O’Malley, and releasing his work on labels including Editions Mego, Senufo, and Shelter Press / Always meticulously detailed yet immediately affecting, Bonnet’s work situates itself at a very personal intersection between the traditions of academic electronic and electroacoustic music, and a more shadowy, underground group of approaches to experimental sound: kosmische Musik, the tape murk of the 1980s underground, the haunted ambience of Christoph Heemann & Co / Meith immediately welcomes us into its densely layered sound world of electronic tones, positive organ, and unidentifiable field-recorded textures. Almost static yet constantly in flux, it deliberately opens itself up to repeated and varied listening: from a distance, its many voices cohere into a monolithic plane of sound, while closer inspection reveals myriad details and momentary events. Like a drop of ink spreading through water, harmonic material present in one voice gradually fans out into the whole arrangement, creating fleeting moments of unity amid the constantly shifting waves of tone and texture

  • "The Current Inside", Marja Ahti's sophomore album for Hallow Ground, plays with the theme of currents - connecting and animating movements in the form of air, water and electricity. It approaches sound as a poetic medium, focusing both on the experience of sound as form and energy and on a loosely narrative arc, suggesting a riddle on the relations between the sounds. It implements alternative as well as intuitive tunings, analog and digital synthesis, recordings of sonorous spaces and vessels, electromagnetic fields transduced into audio, acoustic close-ups of elements in motion and other field recordings. Fluently connecting quite diverse sound sources, Ahti's music lingers in a zone between abstract sonorities and vaguely familiar acoustic environments

Myth of Equilibrium delves into these divergent paths by featuring equal parts of pastoral raw acoustic percussion combined with C. Lavender’s signature “devastating caustic drones" (Ad Hoc) via her custom bass guitar and synthesizers / An assistant to the late pioneering electronic composer and Deep Listening founder Pauline Oliveros, C. Lavender’s astute editing and the binaural recording process places the listener within the heady fluctuating underworld she has created on this album. The recording environment of the geodesic dome allowed for sounds to transfer out beyond the confines of the walls as well as allowing outside sounds from the surrounding wilderness to permeate in like that of a mutating cell. The album suggests “headphone listening” for the full hypnotic experience Myth of Equilibrium presents to the listener. C. Lavender is a 2020 Pioneer Works (New York) Music Artist-in-Residence

Schnitzler's tracks in the 1970s were lengthy and shared a musical pattern which varied only minimally. Hence the green album has just one track on each side and any changes in melodic structure are subtle in nature. The borders between Schnitzler's creative periods are too nebulous to be sure that the green album represents the coda of his 70s music. The project was originally started anonymously by the late Peter »Sleazy« Christopherson (of Throbbing Gristle, Psychic TV and, most notably, Coil) together with Coil affiliate and seasoned remixer Danny Hyde, who continued the project together with John Deek, who passed away in 2013. "Contemplating Nothingness" is the third release by Electric Sewer Age and the second one that Hyde finished alone. Having previously been only available on CD, it is now re-released

  • Noveller : No Dreams - LP (Fire, 2015)

  • Sarah Lipstate is Noveller and “No Dreams”, her 6th full-length release, welcomes in an era of expanded instrumentation for the Brooklyn-based guitarist and composer. Acclaimed for her previous guitar-only albums, Lipstate tightens her grasp on her title of “An Orchestra of One” while boldly exploring the sonic possibilities of supplementing her signature lush, loop-based guitar soundscapes with textural washes of synth, haunting piano, and pulsing throbs of electronic beats. Aided by her experiences collaborating with renowned film-composer Nathan Larson on original music for several feature film scores, Lipstate expertly blends these new elements with her guitar finally realizing the richness and density that her previous guitar-based albums reached for while still undeniably sounding like Noveller

  • Noveller : Glacial Glow - LP (Fire, 2015)

  • Sarah Lipstate is Noveller and Glacial Glow is her most assured, accomplished statement to date. Lipstate largely sheds the distortion and feedback present in much of her earlier work. Instead, she relies on instantly memorable melodies, a wider sonic palette, and excellent pacing to deliver arguably her best album / Noveller announces her intentions from the opening track, appropriately titled "Entering", as the syncopated rhythm of the melody represents a new twist from her previous guitar work. This is only the hors d'oeuvre for the stunning "Glacial Wave", which drifts along serenely until Lipstate rains down gorgeous arpeggios like icy shards from the heavens. Other pieces feature sparse arrangements anchored by pulsing throbs which evoke a subtle, creeping anxiety more menacing than the feel-good retro-horror soundtracks making the rounds these days / Throughout Glacial Glow, Lipstate exercises restraint and a fleeting melancholy feeling pervades the album. It says something about an album's quality when the closing track, "Ends", is chosen as the lead-off video. Ocean sounds combine with the lovely chord progression and guitar lines to create an uplifting, yet slightly wistful feeling and a perfect bookend to the record

  • Joe McPhee : Nation Time - LP (Superior Viaduct, 2019)

  • It’s been nearly five decades since Joe McPhee assembled a group of musicians to perform the weekend concerts that would become Nation Time, his debut LP. It was December 1970, thirty-one-year-old McPhee was inspired by Amiri Baraka’s poem "It’s Nation Time," and the students at Vassar College didn’t know what hit them. "What time is it?" shouted the bandleader. "C’mon, you can do better than that. What time is it?!" / The music on Nation Time came out of the fertile, but little-known creative jazz scene in Poughkeepsie, New York, McPhee’s home base. Two bands were deployed, one with a funky free foundation featuring guitar and organ, the other consisting of a more standard jazz formation with two drummers and the brilliant Mike Kull at the piano. Across the concert and the next afternoon’s audience-less recording session, the band was ignited by McPhee’s passion and his gorgeous post-Coltrane / post-Pharoah tenor. On "Shakey Jake," they hit a James Brown groove filtered through Archie Shepp, while the sidelong title track is as searching and poignant today as it was during its heyday / Originally released in 1971 on CjR, an imprint started expressly to document McPhee’s music, Nation Time has a sense of urgency and inspiration. Additional material from those December days would later appear on Black Magic Man, Hat Hut’s first release. In fact, the first four records on this seminal Swiss label all featured McPhee

  • Bill Orcutt : Odds Against Tomorrow - LP (Palilalia, 2019)

  • After two LPs and over half a decade spent toiling in the margins of the American Songbook, Bill Orcutt returns to original composition and the blues with his latest LP, Odds Against Tomorrow. Taking its title from Robert Wise’s 1959 film noir, Odds Against Tomorrow retrofits familiar folk/blues forms to the unique sound of Orcutt’s guitar and the result crackles with a freshness and authority that nostalgic retreads cannot deliver / Odds Against Tomorrow is more than an expansion of the territory charted by Bill Orcutt, his eponymous 2017 studio electric debut, although it’s certainly that. With its nods to existing musics, half- step fluctuations, and near-songwriterly manipulations of tension/release, Odds Against Tomorrow is a rock record — almost. Clearly and simply recorded through a clattering Fender Twin in Orcutt’s living room and lovingly mixed by Bay Area neighbor and pedal-steel savant Chuck Johnson, no one would mistake it for any era’s radio fodder, yet the precision of its technique and the swaying Child-ballad logic of its gentler improvisations comfortably seats it between John Mayall and Richard Thompson in your Ikea Kallax

  • Idea Fire Company : The Light That Never Ceases To Fail - LP (Feeding Tube, 2019)

  • In my count, this is the 25th album by Amherst's Idea Fire Company. And it a marvel of creative whackery that unfolds its charms like a glamorous stripper doing a matinee show at a well-lit coal mine. Many key auxiliary members have passed through IFCO's ranks (Dr. Steve, Jessi Leigh Swenson, Meira O'Reilly, Franz de Waard, Graham Lambkin, Matt Krefting, etc.), but the core of the unit has always been Karla Borecky (catcher, piano) and Scott Foust (first base, trumpet/synth). On The Light That Never Ceases To Fail they are joined by bassist, Mike Popovich (a long-time Foust colluder), and the results are an album of unqualified beauty. Karla's piano is the central focus here, employing a simple (almost Satie-like) approach to melody, with a physical touch reminiscent of Chris Abrahams' work with Necks / She combines mystery and familiarity with uncanny ease. Scott's trumpet work has kinda come into its own here as well, sounding like Franz Koglmann mocking Chet Baker. His synth playing also has its own distinct atmospheric quality. Sometimes it's like a distant fog horn guiding brine shrimp to safety, at others more like someone trying to make wood sculptures with a band saw. Popovich's bass playing uses an equally sneaky environmental approach, often appearing to be an immobile object that suddenly shifts its posture in a way that is contextually startling. Scott Foust has been one of the leading lights of the Western Mass experimental scene for many long years. That we have only done one record with him thus far (Dead Girls Party, an overlooked masterpiece) is mostly due to the fact that we keep very different hours. How nice to sync up for this one

  • David Toop : Apparition Paintings - LP (Room40, 2020)

  • A companion piece of sorts to his recent, brilliant "Field Recording and Fox Spirits" tableaux of magic-realist location recordings, "Apparition Paintings" is an ambitious, sprawling new album from David Toop, at this point 50-years deep into a career that his seen him explore constantly shifting musical topographies, as well as work as a researcher, writer and critic. It’s an ambitious and restless work, featuring contributions from Áine O’Dwyer, Rie Nakajima, Paul Burwell and Elaine Mitchener among others, and shifts from a sort of skewed Fourth World ambient to atomised jazz-fusion and country-folk with curiously plasmic results. "Don’t ask me about genre or consistency / Who cares?" says Toop - and of course we don’t, and you shouldn’t - especially at this precise moment in time. What you get here is a personal narrative mapped out on the back of Toop’s eyelids, one moment reminding us of Eiko Ishibashi’s recent folklore masterpiece Hyakki Yagyo, before retreating down a mazy Gamelan wormhole, into shimmering chorus-pedal dreampop, Laswellian fusion and concrète abstractions - without flinching. "Half the world is drowning; the other half is in flames. Each story is an animal, a plant, something you drink, a surface you touch, a faint line, some memory emanating from a cardboard box. "Things" in themselves are only events that for a while are monotonous," wrote Carlo Rovelli in The Order of Time. Maybe sounds are melting "things", tired of the monotonous real

Since The Sound signed with major label WEA shortly after the released of World Of Rubber, the album ended up being Second Layer’s swansong, making it all the more sought after today

His early love of electronics proved fruitful when (still a teenager) he was hired at King Tubby’s studio in Kingston. Brown quickly ascended the ranks and became heir to Tubby’s throne, producing imaginative and technically impressive mixes that solidified his forward-looking nickname / Originally released in 1981, In The Kingdom Of Dub remains one of the best early LPs in Scientist’s long career. • Maths Balance Volumes : A Year Closer - LP (Penultimate Press, 2020)

  • In their music of the past twelve years, Maths Balance Volumes (Mankato, Minnesota) has made music in and of a hometown overshadowed and unsettled by its history, music for a world in which things have never been okay. Traditional American folk genres seep in at times, but never as the incarnation of a living popular culture - only as ghosts or unliving effigies / "A Year Closer" tells us already in its title what its theme is: approaching death, time ticking away and getting closer with each track of the record. Musically, "A Year Closer" is a series of pieces that make symphonies out of separate processes of decay and disappearance: unidentified cracking and creaking objects, broken equipment, and lost melodies that seem to have escaped other songs and wandered into the room looking for a place to hide

  • Sarah Davachi : Cantus, Descant - 2xLP (Late Music, 2020)

  • Black vinyl, gatefold sleeve / Sound artist and composer Sarah Davachi presents us with Cantus, Descant, a sprawling new double-album of organ drones and dreamy songs, that features vocals for the first time. Released through the artist's own label Late Music label. "I spent a lot of time while working on this album thinking about impermanence and endings, which led me to change my understanding of “vanitas” and “memento mori.” These concepts arise allegorically across classical antiquity and Buddhist thought, among many other sources, but they were most obsessively expressed during the Renaissance in still lives and miniatures that contrasted the simultaneous passing and stillness of time. My interpretation is completely secular, softer, and more benign, but the awareness of a moment’s feeling remains / There’s a lot of symbolist imagery in the work titles, references to place and nature; the “Stations” series in particular is a reconfiguring of the idea of states of being. The pervading affect on the album is one that gives reverence to the suspension, the epoché, a space where we welcome and attempt to reconcile impermanence. It is an opportunity to go inside—oneself, one’s sound—in order to simultaneously commune with our comforts and that which we mourn, perhaps not unlike the function of a hymn."

  • Green vinyl / ARS SUBTILIOR (14th century) and the NOISE: the two inspirations of Christophe Guiraud which are like two rivers which are woven in a writing of great power. The French young composer is the link between the most accomplished scholarly music and some radical aspects of noise. Born in Toulouse mid-seventies, he settles in Brussels - which becomes the crossroads of a continuous creation. Currently works and has been collaborating since several years with numerous European ensembles and musicians such as Ensemble Ictus, Phønix16, Tom Pauwels, Timo Kreuser, Ensemble 21, Sturm und Klang… / His most recent pieces intimately mix instrumental timbre and sound hybridization, cultivating a certain secrecy around this alchemy. Here more than everywhere else, Christophe Guiraud's new compositions create a dialogue between the times, from the polyphony of Ars Nova to Spectralism, while integrating his noise heritage. Resolutely an-historical, the last pieces presented here unfold in a trembling stagnation

Their aim is to take a different look at electronic music, or rather more specifically the "electronic mind" asapplied to today’s 21st century music. IRE questions the notion on the live interpretation of electronic compositions, the use ofelectricity, and advancement of the organology towards hybrid instruments and orchestration / Phill Niblock is an Indiana-born (1933) New York-based avantgarde composer and multimedia artist, founder of Experimental Intermedia. Niblock's program is, fundamentally, to create music without rhythm or melody, by slow accumulation of microtones. Niblock's droning soundscapes originate from the superimposition and juxtaposition of sustained sounds which are, in turn, obtained from reprocessing acoustic instruments. Since this requires a competent manipulation of the sounds actually produced by the instruments, Niblock's music is often eventually refined by the composer while sitting in front of an electronic or digital tool

  • The intimacy of Akiyama’s Thaumaturgy is immense. In nine short through-composed pieces written over a ten-year period, Akiyama captures something melodic, simple, and utterly transfixing. In his first instrumental solo acoustic guitar record in more than a decade, Akiyama, widely known for his improvisatory collaborations as well as his hypnotizing boogie-drone guitar pieces, here works without effects and maintains a strict harmonic palette throughout. Every note is given ample space to ring out and decay, together slowly and deliberately building the frame that is to become the completed structure. The resulting atmosphere of his pared down grammar threads each individual track to the next as the songs work together with the gravity of a single object. In fact, one might think of each track like a room in a house

Known prominently for her sculptural Long String Instrument (LSI), these musique concrete pieces showcase an underrecognized side of Fullman’s sound investigations. In two expansive works, Fullman voyages through the comic, the menacing and the blissful all while evoking the unique kinetic and timbral aesthetic for which she is widely praised. Composed between 1987-1989, while living in Austin, Texas, the music originally served as accompaniment to choreographer Deborah Hay's dance piece of the same name. The besom presse release presents the last two movements of the full composition / "Music For The Gardener" uses the image of a curbside garden decorated with bits of broken glass and scrap wood. Recordings of these materials are manipulated with a prophet sampler to build an audio mosaic out of discarded things. "Music For The Aviator" is rooted in Deborah’s directive: "we contain the mystery, but we don't know what it is."

Now living far apart and coming together only for intense periods of shows and touring, the band have come to rely on an archive of mp3s (quick recall overtakes stable long term memory). Written on mobile phones, dictaphones, and laptops, "Fast Edit" cuts rehearsals and schemas with tight, raucous tracks.
