William Basinski is up to his old tricks with new LP On Time Out Of Time. Here we find the Disintegration Loops bloke sampling - what else? - black holes. In lesser hands the sheer audacity of this move could eclipse the music made from it, but On Time Out Of Time’s 40-minute title track remains the main attraction. It’s one of Basinski’s most detailed and nuanced compositions yet, delicately shifting between different FM drones
The Eno-esque passages of pure harmony towards the end are a lovely pay-off. Those who cop the vinyl of On Time Out Of Time will get an exclusive second mix of the eponymous number, while digital customers can satisfy themselves with the dreamy, faintly Orb-like swirl of ‘4(E+D)4(ER=EPR)’
